International 674 - 4WD??

I am the happy owner of a 1974 International Harvester 674. It has a timber crane mounted on the roof, and I primarily use the tractor for forest thinning and firewood production. Although very useful to me, its biggest drawback is that is has only two wheel drive. To date, I have not seen any 674's with 4WD.

However, i recently came across an ad in which somebody is selling his 1974 International Harvester 444, and lo and behold! - it has original 4WD! So I started thinking - if the 444 came with 4WD, then perhaps the 674 also did, and if so, could it be possible to retrofit 4WD on my IH 674?

Now, retrofitting may not be worth the expenditure (I don't know how expensive that would be, if at all possible), but it would be very nice to know if this is at all possible. Therefore, I am hoping that someone in this forum still remembers these classy tractors sold in the 1970's and that he or she could help answer my questions.

Yours sincerely,

Do you speak any German? There is a 644 4wd on German ebay now. Maybe it compares to your 674. Maybe find a 4x4 that matches yours and put your attachments then use your 674 as a helper or sell it. Don't know what transport would do to you (the 644 is 1600 km away from you), but you should be able to find something in northern germany.

I've been whining that I want a 4wd the last couple months and found out that tire chains work wonders and are cheaper.

Good Luck,

Dave

Hi Lars, yused to sell new 674 tractors back in the 1970s. The only 4wd available for the 674 was an inferior Jap one. THE later 84 series tractors all had ZF front axles wich were a lot better axle. The 644 tractor would also have a ZF front axle. MJ

Thanks to both of you - I love the way these forums makes you able to reach people who know so much about these things that are otherwise quite hard to find out..

Anyways, I have previously found (I just remembered) an ad for a 674 4WD. Apparently it had the Kimco front axle and not the later (and better?) ZF axle. Would this be the inferior jap version? (see last of the uploaded images)

For your info I've also uploaded an image of the IH 444 with 4wd and my very own 674 (cell phone image).

Br,
Lars

I could find a place for the 444........ Guess you already have chains. With that little bit of snow you have, maybe 4x4 would help a little.

Good luck.

I just got in a CaseIh 585 4wd that we are going to part out. I think that front end will go on a 674, anybody know for sure?

I doubt a conversion would be practical. You'd need to look at the transmission housing and rear axle housing to see if there is an arpeture there to mount the transfer case. I very much doubt that there is... I know Ford's of that vintage used separate housings for 2WD and MFWD... so conversions were not possible without changing the housings. Be easier to get another tractor already equipped with MFWD and install your loader on that.

I see your point, Rod! I still want to explore Fred's idea a little further, though. If you look at the above picture, you can see what I gather must be the transfercase coming out of the rear axle housing.

On my 674 there is an inspection plate that goes directly into the gears. I wonder whether the transfer case from the 585 would fit on my 674..?I guess not, but just to make sure: Fred, how is the transfer box mounted on the 585? Is it separate from the rest of the tractor body?

I doubt it, the 585 runs its transfer case and driveshaft on the right hand side. Seems to me the transaxle on the 85 series is a whole lot different too.

You are likely best off finding a fwa tractor than trying to add on to your 674.

Never saw a fwa 74 series "here"

Lots of fwa 84 series, both Kimco and ZF.

Hi Lars, IH did not offer the 4w/d drive to the British farmer. Manitou used the Italian made Sige axle on thir 4RM25C machineswich used the IH444 power units. The picture of the 444 looks like a Sige front axle. Very costly axle to repair and woud need half Norway to turn round in as the steering lock was poor.
