opposed piston engine

Interesting engine, tho this is not a new idea they were making power units with this principal in the 40"s

Not uncommon. Just depends on what industry you are in. We bought many of them as generator drivers for Alaskas N. Slope. I think we bought them from Buffalo Forge. Probably had Westinghouse or GE generators. Most of them had expanision air starters. They could be maintained without shutting them down. Many ran for months before any shutdowns.

A very simple and interesting design. There have been many opposed piston designs using two or more crankshafts, but this one using a single crankshaft with such simple piston linkage is unique.
It is very little more complicated than an opposed cylinder Briggs lawn mower engine. It should be cheap to build and simple to maintain.

Rather clever. It's an updated marine engine design. This would make a diesel/JP8/Jet A-1 piston aircraft engine possible.

A guy I used to work with was trying to get a patent on something like that, but the office refused his idea becuase there was already somthing similar out there.

I think his would have used 2 cranks though.

There have been many similar designs. One of the reasons for trying this approach is the belief that eliminating the cylinder head reduces energy lost from cooling. None has ever gone into production. I believe one problem is getting a good combustion chamber shape while maintaining an acceptable compression ratio.

Hundreds, probably thousands, of internal combustion engine designs have been tried over the years. The reason none have succeeded isn't so much that they didn't have merit, but rather that the poppet-valve piston engine is so well understood that it would take an enormous amount of work to catch up using an alternative design.

Isn't there someone out there fiddling to make the 4 stroke engine fire twice as fast, using the same principle.?? Saw something on TV but bit hazy.
