OT: summer Adirondack pictures

I had five days to make a trip late last August, so I loaded my bicycle and rode over to the Eagle Bay area in the Adirondacks. It's about 85 miles each way, but the country is quite pretty and it's good exercise. Two days on the road and three days of hiking and camping. I'm looking forward to going back this year if I can, and the winter is a good time to plan a trip. I'm sorry there is no tractor content, but the last picture does include a cornfield I passed on my way home.

Pretty country, ain't it? I'm on the other end of Stillwater from Eagle Bay, and it's just as nice here, though not as hilly.

I’m glad you did all that peddling and I was able to enjoy the scenery…………Get a few more from different angles for me next year, would you?

We've got a solar-powered cabin in that area, but more towards Blue Mountain Lake where's it's a litle less crowded in the summmer.

My grandmother came though Ellis Island in 1912 and got sent to live in the Old Forge-Eagle Bay area. Part of the trip was by Adirondack steamboat. Years later, I found that cabin you can see in these 1912 photos and I stripped it just before it got torn down. The color photo is what I found, just as it was being torn down.

Kind of hard now to envision what it was like to have to travel there by horse-drawn wagon and steamboat. Especially for my grandma who didn't speak any English and came from a rural farmining area of southern France. Three women and two little kids were sent there to live all summer.

One girl that worked with my grandma later changed her name and became the famous movie actress Claudette Colbert. The little boy in one photo later became a famous Naval commander in WWII.

priceless , really nice story thanks for posting it . Thats what I like about this site you never know what interesting stuff will pop up . It is great!! thanks again

That is neat to have that kind of historical connection. Good thing you got there in time. I found it was very quiet once I got away from the Fulton Chain and 28. I spent 24 hours on the trails in the edge of the Pigeon Lake Wilderness Area just four miles north of Eagle Bay and only saw one other party, and they weren't close enough to talk to. I actually took more than 200 pictures and I tried to pick the best ones to post on here. It's hard not to get carried away with that kind of scenery.

Zach, I dont care if there is any tractor pics, those are beautiful pictures, I live in NY and havent got see all its beauty, thanks for the pictures J

I'm not exactly a "world traveller" but I doubt there is a more beautiful place on earth as the central and northern Adirondacks. I'm not too crazy about the "new" Adirondacks though, e.g. Lake George or Sacandaga area that were added later. Some of those Old Forge "number" lakes can get pretty crowded and noisy. Jet skis, motor boats, sea planes, etc. I tend to spend a lot of non-winter time around Indian Lake, Racquette Lake, and Blue Mountain Lake. It's usually less crowded and my property is next to Lake Abanakee - a non-motor lake.

We live about 120 miles from Old Forge and the ride seems like nothing - since we take all back roads. Beautiful all the way.

I'm not much for man-built attractions - but the new natural history Wild Center in Tupper Lake is quite impressive. They've done an amazing job on the place. It's also a rehab area for wayward otters, eagles, fishers, etc. I hope they can keep going during the bad economy.
