OT . What has happen to my windshield wipers?

During the last snow my windshield wipers iced up , etc. Anyway now when I turn them off they will not go down out of the way. They stop straight up at 12;00 , everytime. What have I messed up and is their a fix..

We are being blasted with snow this afternoon, I bet it snowed 6 inch in the last hour, Electric has been off several times starting last night. We still had snow on the ground from last weekend.

If they are otherwise working fine, could be that when they were frozen and you turned them on, the shaft turned inside the arm 180 degrees or so. Let it go til warm weather and fix it (at least til the snow is gone).

Your'e going to have to get a look at the linkage and see if anything appears bent. Look closely at the crank arm. This is the piece that attaches to the wiper motor.

I do not know what kind of vehicle you have but GM vehicles are good at bending at the crank arm if they get iced up.

Robert, is it still wiping a normal pattern and just parking in the middle of the window, or is it wiping one half and reaching off the edge of the glass? If it's not wiping a normal pattern, I would think the linkage has bent or overcentered. If it's wiping normal and parking in an odd place, I'd think it would be slippage on the motor shaft or the park switch in the motor, assuming the motors still operate that way. If everything else is OK, can you pull the wiper arms and reset them so it will park properly?

My uncle had a motor home and the wiper linkage would overcenter and act real stupid. Was easy to fix after we figured out what to pull on.

There is a clutch of sorts where they pivot. Does it all the time on my Chev 2500.

Put em where they go and tighten the screw.

Make sure they are not iced down before you turn them on next time. They will slip.

There is a soft metal bushing inside the wiper arms where the arms attach to the splines on the motor. The bushing is soft so it will strip before the splines strip and prevent MAJOR damage in just you situation. You can try to just tighten the nut or bolt that holds the arm on, but you may have to go get new arms.

Instead of everyone reposting basically the same thing would'nt it be easier if everyone just added a suggestion to the main post?

If you look the same basic idea has been posted several times.
