What brake system to use

I bought this tri axle railor a few weeks ago which I plan to attached to my MF 1155 for towing a MF 97 or Mf 1130. At the moment it has a ring type hitch with overrun hydraulic brakes.I plan to convert the ring hitch to jaws on the trailor system to fit the tractor using a pin. Will the overun brakes work or should I convert them to work off the hydraulic system on the tractor or is there a system available to allow me to connect the trailor brakes directly up to the tractor foot brake? We need good brakes here in Scotland due to the narrow and busy roads we have. Any thoughts or ideas welcome.

I wouldn't change the brake system for anything else. You should be able to get the another slide in attachment with a smaller ring that is closer to the size of the pin on your tractor. Wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't find an insert to downsize the one you have. That type of hitch is used on about everything here in Germany. What's the heaviest load (including trailer) you'd tow and how fast?

Hello Bill,
I would never do this for a customer but for my own use, you would need to be good with a torch and a welder. if you cut out a heavy plate the size of the "D ring" hole and make a hole in that the size of your draw pin then weld it in. get a peace of flat bar with a hole in it and weld it to the bottom of the brake slide. I also would not change the brake system if it works.
Good luck Ed

What about making an adapter to mount a pintle hitch on your drawbar? You could find or make a tube to slide over the drawbar with a pin that drops in and then fasten the pintle hook to that. My $.02. Jeff

Why not build a heavy "box" that will slide over the Massey's drawbar with a pintle hitch pad welded to the end. Bolt the pintle hitch to the pad, slid it over the drawbar, insert a draw pin thru the "box" and drawbar and then back up to the trailer and hook up. You can then leave the trailer as is.

Alternative:
Deere has a "hammer strap" that bolts to their drawbar which converts it to a clevis style hook up. Could you do something similar to the Massey?

I'll try to get a photo of the Deere set up on my 4010.

Surge brakes work well if properly maintained.

You have something to this effect on your tractor already don't you?

Here is a photo. The Deere has an offset drawbar but that could be compensated with a spacer block if Massey's is straight. You would need a couple of unused drawbar holes though.

I would leave the trailer alone and build an easily removable hitch for the tractor.

If the trailer is rated for that load, the brakes will handle it also. AND at highway speeds I'm sure. How do you folks hook up your other trailers and wagons?

Was it you a week or so ago that was looking for parts yards? If so how did work out?

Eight ton is nothing for that tractor. Assuming long tons, that is 314 bushels of corn. Short tons, 286 bu. It is nothing to see 7-800 bu behind that sized tractor around here. That is roughly 20 tons of corn, tractor and wagon weight is in addition.

I pull double wagons with approx 440 bu. which is 12.3 short tons. I wish I had larger wagons.
