A Farmall charging problem

My A has a cutout on top of generator. The brushes look good as well and the armature which is bright colored.

Everything looks good inside the cutout.

The light switch has the LHDB.

The problem is when its set on low it doesn't show that its putting out any amperage. When I set it to high, it will only charge about 4 amps.

QUESTION--Is there a way that I can make the generator charge at full rate by using a jumper wire? If it continues to charge at a low rate does that mean the generator is shot?

Thanks for your help.

Why do you think you need more amps. Does the A still have the mag. 4A is a good charge rate with a mag as only need the batt for starting. Realy you are in good shape. Send e-mail if you have any further questions as your charge rate can be increased.

When set to high it should charge enough to keep 3 lights working with no draw on battery and that would be I am guessing about 10-12 amps. That low rate is just for keeping the battery up for starting but the high rate is for using the lights. Was the same on the Farmall H I had. Was the low rate, high rate for fully chargeing a low battery or high with lights.

One easy way to check it is to check the voltgage of the battery after running for a time to be sure it's fully charged. Check and note the voltage at the battery while running. Kill the engine and check the voltage. Assuming a six volt system, it should read 6.6 volts. (2.2 volts/cell X 3 cells equals 6.6 volts) The no load running voltage should be somewhat higher. On a 12 volt system, 13.2 volts not running and 14.2 volts running at normal temperatures. A good voltage regulator would kick it up to nearly 15 volts in cooler weather. That's the way I have found it to work in marine applications. If I'm off base, I'm sure I'll be corrected. C.L.

Putting a jumper to ground from the F terminal (small sized) will put full field voltage to it. It is probably a three brush gen. Moving the third brush closer to the fixed brush will increase output. Jim
