Can anyone tell me what the recomended type of oil should be used in the transmission hydraulic and rear end of this tractor?

you should use "tractor transmission and hydraulic fluid." There is usually a list of manufacturers on the bucket whose specs it meets. Many, many different makes and models use it. About any parts place will have it.

It originally called for SAE 80W or 90W gear oil, even if it has the Multipower setup. That applies to all the Ferguson TO35s and Massey Ferguson 35s up to 1964.

Whether or not your tractor will hold a lighter oil, remains to be seen. The modern combo trans/hydraulic oils are only 20W. But, just to get the numbers straight - combo hydraulic/trans oil is 20W (by motor oil specs) and 90W gear oil is actually 40W by motor oil specs.

Look at your tractor book, the gear oil it calls for could be a mineral gear oil. Your local oil jobber will have it.

They are all mineral oils (unless synthetic). The 35 series originally called for "pure" SAE mineral oil in the 80-90W range if trans-rated oil, or 30-40W if engine-oil rated. Trans -rated would of been GL-1. Engine would be non-detergent 30W or 40W.

The reason for "pure" mineral oil was the fear that some EP additives corrode brass and copper and also make wet brakes slip. Only thing that qualifies in the 35 tractor is the brass in the hydraulic pump. But, most modern GL-5 gear oils are not rated as not being corrosive anymore. So, as far as I can tell, a modern GL5 80W-90 is well suited for the 35 series tractors, and gives more wear protection.

Thanks for everyone's help - I'm new into restoring this old iron, and this site has been a source of great information...
