Ya I know this will go bye bye fast but what the heck
To all those that do not display the flag correctly and or condone it not being flown the correct way let me say this.
I take that as a slap in the face of this Disabled Vet and I as one of the vets take it as a slap in the face of all those who have served and all those who have died serving this nation. Proud to be an American and I took and oath to serve flag and county and still stand by that oath.
So I say this DISPLAY it right or DO NOT display it at all
And yes it makes me mad to here people say things as to how to do it wrong and how they do it wrong

I don't think the fate of the nation hangs on whether a flag displayed at night is illuminated or not. Seems to me an un-illuminated flag is better than no flag at all. But that's just my humble opinion, from one veteran to another.

As being a VFW times change and to be honest with ya like Mike says..I"d rather see the flag flown than not at all. Sure it is not right but atleast we may still fly her. There may come a time when we"ll not be able too. Who knows? I have mine lit up and neighbor does not. I'm glad and proud he flys one.. Take it as you want Old glory lives on. And by God i hope it is up when the other neighbor kid comes home form his tour..

Think about what you're saying Rich..... Want to go through all the Cemeteries and take the flags off of Veterans' graves cause they are not lit up at night, dirty, crooked, not on the correct side of the grave????
Americanism isn't a "do it right or don't do it" kinda thing. It's about paying respect in the best way you can within your limits.

Are you suppose to burn a U.S.A flag that is no longer displayble? I thought I read that somewere. Sorry if wrong.

AMEN! I have a friend that displays it wrong on his tractor in every parade he attends. He is just to stubborn to admit he is wrong. We could have a 100 tractors all displaying it correctly and he would say they are all wrong. I told him one day that he either do it right or don't do it at all. These instruction are to easy to get for people to be doing it wrong.

I agree with you that it is a slap in the face to us VETs. I am proud of my country and it's flag. "Don't Mess With the Flag I Defended"

You know there is a right way and a wrong way to do everything. If you really truly want to show your support for our country, then do it the proper way. Otherwise if you do it half-a$$ed you really don't look like you care. If you can't afford to or don't have the ability to put a light on it at night, or have have some other impediment keeping you from flying our countries flag properly then just don't do it. To be honest if a person were truly passionate about flying the flag and couldn't light it at night, they would fly it during the day and take it down at night. That's perfectly legit.

(quoted from post at 18:39:25 02/05/10) Are you suppose to burn a U.S.A flag that is no longer displayble? I thought I read that somewere. Sorry if wrong.
Yes, but don't just throw it in the fire. Drop it off at your local American Legion or VFW post and they'll usually take care of it for you.

Dave

That's the problem with our country today, to many people willing to settle for close enough. That teaches no morals and no discipline. No wonder the kids today don't respect the flag.

I dont have a flag displayed any where but over my bed...24 hrs a day....What is the wrong way you are speaking of? what its the wrong way to display it on a tractor? Not meaning to be wise i jsut honestly do not know?

So it would be wrong to display 2 flags in the grill, Like one on each side facing outwards. I ahve seen this several times at tractor shows.

I have to admitt Im guilty of flying the flag the wrong way then, It was at a charity for "support the troops" i bought a flag for $5 and i stuck it in the bracket on my seat, But thats where i was told to stick it by the people runing the place , and on ym behalf im sorry for the disrespect, I did not know

Oh so true. Now days the guys in the navy has it rougher then when I was in. My son who is now down in Gulf Port MS says he still has not had off base liberty yet and will not for a week or more and he has been down there since Jan. 12th or so. Back when I was in and got to my first duty station after boot camp I had liberty with in 24 hours.
So yep this flag thing hits me in more then one way. Oh and in boot camp he carried one of the flags when doing drills

But did you know those flags are suppose to be removed that evening and not left there. Ya most places do not do that but a lot also do so. Most V.A. cemetery do in fact have some one come and remove them or at least they do around here

I also tought that the flag cannot touch the ground? No one has made mention of this, so maybe Im wrong.

If it is two US Flags it is ok as far as I know. If you are displaying it with any other flag (i.e. state flag) it goes on the right, slightly higher than the other flag, and the US Flag must be the larger of the two (if one is larger than the other), it is ok for the the two flag to be same size. Placing the US Flag slightly higher than the state flag puts the US Flag in it position of precedents.

For snyone that wants to know who you sould display the American Flag, here you go.

Flag Etiquette
STANDARDS of RESPECT
The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:

The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard
The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.
The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

Note: Most American Legion Posts regularly conduct a dignified flag burning ceremony, often on Flag Day, June 14th. Many Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Girl Scout Troops retire flags regularly as well. Contact your local American Legion Hall or Scout Troop to inquire about the availability of this service.

Displaying the Flag Outdoors
When the flag is displayed from a staff projecting from a window, balcony, or a building, the union should be at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half staff.

When it is displayed from the same flagpole with another flag - of a state, community, society or Scout unit - the flag of the United States must always be at the top except that the church pennant may be flown above the flag during church services for Navy personnel when conducted by a Naval chaplain on a ship at sea.

When the flag is displayed over a street, it should be hung vertically, with the union to the north or east. If the flag is suspended over a sidewalk, the flag's union should be farthest from the building.

When flown with flags of states, communities, or societies on separate flag poles which are of the same height and in a straight line, the flag of the United States is always placed in the position of honor - to its own right.
..The other flags may be smaller but none may be larger.
..No other flag ever should be placed above it.
..The flag of the United States is always the first flag raised and the last to be lowered.

When flown with the national banner of other countries, each flag must be displayed from a separate pole of the same height. Each flag should be the same size. They should be raised and lowered simultaneously. The flag of one nation may not be displayed above that of another nation.

Raising and Lowering the Flag
The flag should be raised briskly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. Ordinarily it should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset. It should be illuminated if displayed at night.
The flag of the United States of America is saluted as it is hoisted and lowered. The salute is held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the last note of music, whichever is the longest.

Displaying the Flag Indoors
When on display, the flag is accorded the place of honor, always positioned to its own right. Place it to the right of the speaker or staging area or sanctuary. Other flags should be to the left.

The flag of the United States of America should be at the center and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of states, localities, or societies are grouped for display.

When one flag is used with the flag of the United States of America and the staffs are crossed, the flag of the United States is placed on its own right with its staff in front of the other flag.

When displaying the flag against a wall, vertically or horizontally, the flag's union (stars) should be at the top, to the flag's own right, and to the observer's left.

Parading and Saluting the Flag
When carried in a procession, the flag should be to the right of the marchers. When other flags are carried, the flag of the United States may be centered in front of the others or carried to their right. When the flag passes in a procession, or when it is hoisted or lowered, all should face the flag and salute.

The Salute
To salute, all persons come to attention. Those in uniform give the appropriate formal salute. Citizens not in uniform salute by placing their right hand over the heart and men with head cover should remove it and hold it to left shoulder, hand over the heart. Members of organizations in formation salute upon command of the person in charge.

The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem
The pledge of allegiance should be rendered by standing at attention, facing the flag, and saluting.
When the national anthem is played or sung, citizens should stand at attention and salute at the first note and hold the salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the flag, if displayed, otherwise to the music.

The Flag in Mourning
To place the flag at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position half way between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered. On Memorial Day the flag is displayed at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset.

The flag is to be flown at half staff in mourning for designated, principal government leaders and upon presidential or gubernatorial order.

When used to cover a casket, the flag should be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. It should not be lowered into the grave.

I don't think that everyone that has a flag up the wrong way is purposely trying to offend anyone. I think if a flag is displayed, in most cases it is because the person(s) is proud of their country and freedom. If it's on the wrong side of a tractor in a parade, for example, the person shouldn't be condemned over it. Disgracing the country should be a bigger deal than the flag. Look at how many politicians, judges, priest's and other people held in high regard have disgraced the country and other people, despite having their flag displayed the right way. Having a flag up, even the right way, and then disgracing the country(and flag) is much worse in my opinion. Dave

Ya it is one thing to do it and not know you are doing it wrong but the know what is right and still do it wrong is another story. Ya the way this county is any more there are more crooks in office then there are in most jails which is sad to say about this county any more.
What ever happened to gov. by the people for the people. Now days it is more like by the rich for the rich on the backs of the poor

i served this country as well, i see more flags flown incorrctly, then correct, but to be honest
(in this day of age i am just glad to see it being flown, as most dont share enough pride to even own 1

It does not bother me to see one flown wrong if the person doesn't know better but it does bother me when I know the person know what is right but still does it wrong. Ya I do not own one my self but shoot if I had one and displayed it no one would see if but me. Some how my mile long drive way makes it so few people ever come down here

I agree. If you know how to display it correctly, display it correctly. If you know how to display it and do it wrong, then it shows no respect,IMHO.I took mine down temporarily because the power for light to it got torn out, so no flag until I can do it correctly.

I fly the flag on the front of barn 24/7 and it is lighted by a street light only. I fly the flag because I am a 100% proud to be American. I don't get torn up over anybody flying the flag on their tractor or elsewhere in an incorrect place or fashion as long as it is obvious they mean no disrespect. Some need to get over the fact that flying a US flag that isn't exactly correct for some reason and that isn't meant to be disrespectful is wrong. I fly my flag from my heart, not from some text that spells out every jot and tittle. By the way, this is coming from a Viet combat vet (71-72) that prouldy served my country on an artillery hill in the boonies of Vietnam!

Ya one of the biggest problems with this country any more is tittle or no respect for others and the nation. At one time this nation was a great place now it is just so so with no one giving a darn about any thing or any body.

(quoted from post at 10:01:28 02/06/10) now it is just so so with no one giving a darn about any thing or any body.

To think you had enough balls to say that "I" don't think much of America.
Maybe you oughta set the bottle aside when you're surfing.
Not saying that you're a bad person or that you're not a well of knowledge and help, you just rub it a little wrong once in awhile.

God Bless Ya anyway Brother

Dave

LOL what bottle??? I never drink out of a bottle. LOL Plus been more then a week since I have even had a drink. And yes the kids now days don't give a darn about any thing or any body. But since your way over there you may not understand what it is like to live in the U.S. any more. When you have kids playing there music so load you can't even here you're self think is that giving a darn about any body else well heck no it isn't and I could list many more things but will not

I DID kinda get a culture shock when I was visiting last year in a couple places. But most folks' hearts are in the right place, just need their heads lined up in the same direction. But, for all the crime, and bad things that you here on TV, I never met an unfriendly person or had any problem with anyone at all from Baltimore, DC, Columbus, and plenty of stops in between. Not complaining at all though.

Dave

Ya see a visit and living in one place are 2 different things. When you visit you only see a few and most can tell you are not one of the locals. But if you stay a long time then things change.
One thing that bugs the $%^^#% out of me is the guy that pulls out in front of you on a hwy and your doing say 60mph and he causes you to have to slow down to 30mph then goes 100 yards and turns off, oh and by the way your the only car with in miles when they do that. If he had waited 30 sec. he could have pull on the road and then made his turn off and not caused any body any problems but no he has to show how he disrespects others. Sad to say but it happen way to much any more.

I am with you on that one. People are in such a hurry , they can't wait that extra 30 seconds. I wish I had a tank to ram all the dumm a-holes.

Thank you for posting that. I think most people my age, (29ish) dont realize the rules that go with a flag. Never heard of most of them.
Thanks Again
Ryan
