Proper Flag etiquette

Want to hang an American Flag up on my barn to go with my IH Flag but someone just told me its not proper to leave it up 24/7 if there isnt a light on it at night. Is that correct? Too high up to take down everyday and cant put a light on the peak of the barn. Just dont want to offend anyone.

You can light it from below with 1 or 2 small spot lights. You may need a bracket to put the light a couple of feet out from the barn and pointed up will do a good job. Add a dusk to dawn eye and your set. A lot of flag poles are done from the ground 2 to 3 feet out from the pole and look really good.

I agree that it should be light up at night. My folks put a light down on the ground to shine up on it. Could do that fron the lower corners of the barn. Build some bracks to come away from the barn, so it will light it up better. Around here the HP's cops and emt's that have the flag on their right sleave, have the stars in the upper right hand corner. Everything I have always been told is the stars are to be in the upper left corner.

There are numerous sites with information about proper flag etiquette. Obviously, you're free to do whatever you wish; you'll definitely offend many veterans and probably some others by not showing the proper respect.

Story book says light it. Display it to the marching right (left as you look at it) of the IH flag and keep it clean. If you can swing a CFL floodlight under it (rig up something 12volt if power or fear of fire is an issue) even better. Show your pride, just keep it clean and dignified.

Thanks, Dave

I usually keep mine up from July 4th until Veteran's Day in Nov. The street light may help to see the flag at night. I don't think most residents even pay any attention. I'm a Korean vet from the Army and my brother was in the Air Force. Hal

(quoted from post at 14:13:57 02/05/10) Yep and would you believe by law if it is hanging at night it HAS to have a light shining on it. Checked that a few years ago
Don't think there's much to worry about there.... You can burn it in protest so not lighting it should fly OK.

Dave

Mine flies 24/7; the little box to the far right is the electric eye.

The power lines are actually nowhere near the flag.

It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed.

(quoted from post at 14:36:38 02/05/10) That is true........But then again look at the P.O.S. that sits in the WHITE house.

Sad thing is, this will rub off and your kids will grow up to be sh!theads too.
Think you owe them a little more than that. Granted, there is a clown elected to the position, but you constantly pointing it out and popping off your off colored remarks is just showing your ignorance....

That was my free opinion.

My cowboy logic says that if it's dark enough nobody can see it what difference does it make? I leave mine up and stike it for no one.

That made about as much sense as GG's remarks..You two related?

This kid flying his flag on the barn without a light is no more disrespectful than some idiot tieing it to his tractor and blowing exhaust smoke on it.
Whether I am in the States or not makes no difference.

It should be illuminated at night, but at least you're apparently like alot of us and proud of that flag & what she stands for. So, I for one, as a Viet Nam Vet., salute you for displaying her. All I ask is just look at her from time to time & think of what she stands for. Keith

Dave sorry to say this but your remarks tell us you do not think much of the U.S.A. or you would not be making those remarks guess that is why you live out side of the U.S.

I'd ask you to explain what you just said but don't think you could handle the task. Let's just leave it and let you think as you want. Where I live is none of your business.

I hope this will not go poof and I hope I do not offend any one if I do I am sorry and please forgive me:

They sell some neat little flag lights that are solar powered ao
Flag can be sewn. Aboard US NAvy ships at sea they tatter pretty rapidly. They can be sewn over at the end untile the stripes are no shorted tahn the star field.
Mine flies 24/7 except when winds are over 25 knots. That's Navy for 31 mph :)

Special case for flag patches worn on a uniform. The reversed flag, is to appear as moving forward, the field leading at the staff, with the stripes flowing with wind to rear.
