Attention toyota engineers: If you put the brake pedal on the right side and the accelerator pedal on the left, you might have better luck this time around.

googa gaga! How nice to see your criticism again. Quite frankly, I don't... care. HA!

lol after all the toyota bashing i might remind everyone all manufactures have their issues, its how they step up and remedy it that counts, examples, fords pinto, and its rear end collision fireballs, jeep cj-5's rollover problems , later superceded by fords bronco 2, and lets not forget chevy , the outboard mounted fuel tanks on their trucks, oh yeah and the vega now wasnt that a nice long lasting ride lol a car or truck is a machine, thats all, like all machines it requires its operator to be smarter than it is, a big concern given todays computers vs todays ''consumer'' and companies trying to build vehicles fast and cheap using" wong fu's" china made parts, remember wong fu's last job involved a rice paddy and a hoe, now he's making high tech car parts, we'll see how toyota handels this problem the whole world is watching now and it could make them or bust them

That's exactly right, not everything is perfect. Oh wait, everything is junk in their own ways. Therefore, making fun is entirely feasible, for any brand.

There has been a $200M lawsuit filed in Houston this week. A woman was killed in her Corolla when she hit a concrete barrier. There were no skid marks. Her husband suspects the gas pedal stuck. Apparently she had told him several times, that it seems like the accelerator seemed to move a little on its own. I'm skeptical, but you can bet there will be more lawsuits.

there probably will be, but whats so sad is if the gas pedle sticks all anybody has to do is simply turn the key off, not to lock, but to off, 1 click to the left, you will be able to steer and stop the car with the engine off, its just not rocket science, but nobody seems able to do it

Easier said than done. I bet a lot of people, in a panic situation, would not be able to turn off the key quickly enough to avoid an accident.

That said, if I was Toyota, I'd be interested in seeing her mobile phone usage records...

Why is it so many people are making such a big deal over this. Back a few years ago when Ford was making that flip mo bile running those fire pops people didn't say all that much. Come on people these are made by humans and humans make things that don't always work and the more computer stuff you put into things the more likely it is to screw up

"Turning the key off" sounds pretty simple.

HOWEVER, the way it sounds some of the affected cars don't have conventional ignition switches and you have to depress some button/switch/gizmo thing on the dash for 3 or 5 seconds to shut off the engine, apparently much like clicking the "Start" button on MightGoSoft Windows to begin the process of shutting down a 'puter.

Can you IMAGINE that, having to hold a button depressed, basically saying "Dear Puter, MAY I choose to shut of the engine"?

We've gotten too "smart" for our own good!

never owned a toyota & probably never will but .........
lotta bashing going on
i seem to re-call FORD pintos & CHEV trucks with exploding gas tanks that killed a lot of people in the 70"s
c"mon guys they are machines, and sometimes things don"t work out like they should
toyota puts food on a lot of people"s tables, in canada & the USA

There are several class action suits involving Toyota. It's a big deal because it affects so many vehicles. 8 different models and over 4 million vehicles. When everyone is trying to stress how safe their current vehicles are the worlds largest manufacturer actually has to stop the production line, it's a big deal. Some experts believe that Toyota knew about the problem before it really got attention. If that is true, makes it an even bigger deal. Toyota stands to lose millions and millions and lose future customers for several years. Ford had some problems with transmissions coming out of neutral a while ago but never really got too big. The Firestone tires were a Firestone problem but it became a Ford problem because Ford took their sweet time to acknowledge it and do something about it. GM knew about the bad gas tanks on trucks way before they came to light as well. Maybe severe fines should be imposed on OEM's if it can be shown that they knew about the problems and didn't correct them. Vehicles in perfect condition are still dangerous machines. The OEM's need to have the highest standards of safety, especially for throttle and brake controls. Dave

Anything against pulling it out of gear? It really doesn't matter then if the engine is screaming.Maybe better braking if the engine is running.

Rich, it's kind of like being unemployed versus reading the unemployment numbers. There is a difference. Have you ever experienced a stuck accelerator pedal? It is a bit unnerving to say the least. If you haven't prepared yourself for a sudden out of control condition it can result in a bad ending.

I heard you should not turn the ignition off because the steering is electric over...that does not sound good to me! Greg

I don't own a "rice grinder", and never will,
but i've told my wife a dozen times to "just
shift into neutral", if something like that
happens. In the actual circumstance though I
know she'd panic and wouldn't Know what to do!

That is the thing, have you seen the shifters? it is like a tractor- you have foward, reverse, and off to the side is park. Just like the push button ignition (no key to turn off) you can suggest neutral but the computer will over-ride you. This is what happens when we make cars for dumb people, the car gets smarter then the person and then we have HAL 2000 space odysey type stuff. "Car knows best" "Human monkey along for ride".
I"ll take my clutch and gear shift anyday.

Well lets see at over 1.5 million miles on my driver license yep I have had it all. 1967 Alfa Romero lost the brakes because of a bad wheel cylinder that was back when I was 17 drove it the rest of the night doing my paper route with no brakes. 1980 Che pick up which I still have I floored it coming up a hill and yep the pedal did not come back up when I let off on it. I had to kick it 3 or 4 times to make it free up. 1963 Diamond-T air line broke, no air not brakes and I drive it about 25 miles home. So now what is the big deal if a person really knows how to drive little things should not be a problem. LOL
That reminds me I need to check the throttle cable on my Honda 360 since the last time I rode it the throttle locked up wide open. But again no big deal BTDT and if you keep your mind about things you can work it out

I had a '65 Impala - 327 - accelerator pedal stuck due to a broken motor mount. It allowed the engine to lift off of the mount and bind the linkage in the open position. Kinda exciting for a second, but it fell back down when I slipped it into neutral. They made a replacement mount with a built-in "L" bracket that would hook the other half to keep it from lifting.

I wouldn't want my wife driving it, not that she's a bad driver - she'd be hard to replace (wife, not the car). . .

Oh your talking about the old pinto bean car. Get hit in the back and the driver was as good as a baked bean or so it was said. I owned a couple of them at one time. But then on the other hand way back when there was a guy named Ralph Natter that caused a lot of problem with a lot of car company's and because of him there where many cars discontinued. Was he right well maybe but then maybe not

GM issued a safety recall for all the V-8's of that era. I had a new 69 Caprice Coupe and when they installed the safety package, there was a cable that went from the frame to the exhaust manifold on each side to prevent the motor from rising due to torque reaction if the engine mount gave way.

My grandmother's 68 belair had that cable, just thought the local repair shop did that for a fix with the motor mount, she had a 307 and 3 speed on the tree, sure had some zip, though if you shifted down into 2nd at to high a rpm you'd split the muffler everytime. Didn't know this and felt pretty bad and told her, she told me what I did wrong and she didn't make me pay for it, since she forgot to remind me about it. chris
