Wisconsin vh4d Running Issues

Low houred engine, good compression. New points condensor, cap/rotor, plugs and wires. Rebuilt carburetor just so I would know what I had. Timing is set with engine running above 2000 rpm. Seems that it is running lean, I pulled the plugs and they are white. Engine has a slight miss to it, unless I pull out the choke some, so leads me to believe it needs more fuel. Seems to run a bit better when it is loaded up. But the white plugs make me nervous, dont want to blow a hole in the pistons. I was always told these engines run a bit rich, funny the plugs show white, but it will make my eyes water if I let it idle inside. I have checked the float setting and it is correct according to the book. It also has a new fuel pump. Not sure what to do next.. Could it be a valve clearance issue or do I need a new carburetor? Not sure what to look at next.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

ditto on the air leaks, quick test is to spray carb cleaner around carb/manifold while engine is running, if it speeds up you are sucking air in somewhere

if no air leaks and plugs are white you need more fuel, open main jet screw or even raise float level a bit

or you could go to bigger carb jet size or drill out the main jet, set original jet aside and buy some spare jets to experiment with, just like the dirt bikers do

Timing is good, just checked it again.. Carb doesnt have any leaks, I check it on my block and its flat. I will check the manifold and see if it is leaking.. Thanks guys!

Post back if you find an answer as I have a VH4D that’s always had the same problem. I’ve rebuilt the carb several times and even bought a new one once but it never helped the situation. Couldn’t find an air leak anywhere either. I generally run it with the choke partly closed. Currently in the process of rebuilding the engine after 23 years since it’s last rebuild. I’d like to address the fuel mixture problem again while I’m at it.

From what I am hearing you may need to drill out the primary jet some.. I have an extra jet to play with so I might start their.. I just ordered a rebuild kit, just for the hell of it. I also have another v4hd that has a hole in a piston after 30 hrs on a rebuild that I need to go through for another skid steer.

What did your plugs look like? I also have a bit of gas in the oil which makes no sense at all.. I still need to check for any air leaks at the manifold.. Should just pull them and have them resurfaced so I know they are flat.
