O/T: Sometimes bad really isn't all that bad...

About 3 weeks ago we had a small accident with our Suburban. Slid off a country road and hit the ditch HARD. It bent the center link on the steering gear. What a bad day, right? Well, I finally got around to replacing the part today. While I was down there, I happened to notice that the hoses carrying the transmission fluid into the cooler in front of the radiator had just about rubbed all the way through. They aren't leaking, but I bet a good bump on the road would start them leaking. Let me see, I paid $20 at the junk yard for the center link, plus my time at a time of the year when I don't have tons to do. A new transmission would be like $2K or so. So there was a silver lining after all.

And if you had not had that mishap you could have been stranded somewhere when they started to leak, so the message seems to be...put your head under the car at some time and check things.and that I have failed to do.. other day replaced oil pan because I hit a rock and squashed, while underneath noticed a little drip of water, gave hose a pull and the heater tap collapsed, corroded right through, pipes clogged, no wonder heater didn't work..

My mechanic once told me the worst thing that ever happened to cars regarding preventative maintenance was the elimination of the need to grease it. Not because the grease-less fittings don't work, but because now, with quicky oil changes done by idiots, nobody who knows anything ever looks under the car.
