I noticed yesterday that I still have fall lettuce that is green and still trying to grow. All be it it is short but it is still green. So how in the world is it doing that since the ground is frozen and it has been down around zero a few nights. Does it maybe have to to with the fact it sits close to is not over the top of my septic tank and maybe because of that the ground there is warmer. And if it stays like it is now will it maybe be a very early crop of it this spring. Anybody even had this before??
Thanks

Maybe if you cover it with mulch, leaves, or straw you might be able to get something early in the spring Its worth a try as soon as it starts to warm up remove the mulch

(quoted from post at 18:34:48 01/26/10) over the top of my septic tank

cut a leaf or two and taste it. If it tastes like (well you know), you'll have your answer.....

There's still lettuce and some brussel sprouts in a couple gardens here also.

I bet the ground is slightly warmer directly over your septic tank. The lid to mine is about a foot under the grass, yet the snow never sticks in that 2 foot round spot where it is.

I know this tank sits at least 2 foot deep if not more. I have since it was put in did some back filling in the area to raise the ground level so it got deeper some how LOL Thinking about taking 4 cement blocks and then 2-2X12 and laying them on the blocks then take a piece of tempered glass and laying on that and see if that helps

Certain plants can take a lot of cold and a few, if conditions are right, can take some freezing. In other plants the cell structure fractures but in some just stretches, my term not horticultural language.

Brusselsprouts can also take a lot of cold without damage.

Now why did you have to say something about them?? Now I have to look for them there also. Ya I planted onion in that area so maybe there out there also and I just did not notice them

I grow winter onions in my garden every year. got them from uncle that is 91 he said they had been in his family for at least 80 years " the same strand".

cold weather plants can do that . i have mustard greens in my garden that were covered with snow before christmas til last week that is looking good from a distance . need to check out the spinach also ..... it will bolt in about a month .... the winter rye is looking good .... do you drink a lot of beer ? could be you passed a lot of alchol to the sepectic tank and it lowered the freezing point of the ground .

LOL well being and old navy man yep I do enjoy my beer but don't think I drink enough to warm things up that much LOL. Well maybe it is just the methane needing to be lit up LOL

I"ve mulched some things over winter here in Wisconsin, carrots, kale and a few miscilaneous greens- basicly just covered most of garden patch with leaves for composting in spring. Spring had usable carrots, kale, and mustard greens and oak leaf lettuce when I pulled the leaf mold off. RN.
