Pernell Roberts

I saw on Yahoo before bed that he had passed. Never was into Bonanza growing up. However, the past couple winters I've had ample time to watch it on the satellite TV. I have a different perspective on that show now. Obviously no show is perfect in terms of portraying real life but I find myself drawn to it because of its depiction of a simpler time and a strong family dynamic.
Too bad the last surviving "Cartwright" thought so poorly of the show but I have to say the show was much better with him than without him. Anyways, my hat is off to you in respect for what you contributed.

The show would have been better WITHOUT him. He was arrogant and it showed. And I am a big fan of Bonanza.
Sorry he's dead and all, but he was a dick.

Bonanza was a good show, (The shows today are mostly garbage)

I have questions about the Bonanza show.

1. What happened to the mother of the 3 boys, little joe, hoss, Pernell Roberts, did they ever say?

2. How many square miles was the Ponderosa?

3. How long ago did Hoss die?

I didnt watch the show much, I watched more of the Gunsmoke episodes on TVland.

In answer to some of your questions:The 3 sons each had a different mother, and each died I think. Hoss died while the show was being filmed so there was a year or two with out him. I enjoyed Adam on the show. I used to watch reruns alot, but haven't lately. I agree with some of you, nothing new on TV is worth watching. Gunsmoke was a good one too.

I like the show still. Was never a big fan of Pernell though.

To me it shows two bygone errors. One in the mid 19th century and the other in the mid 20th century.

Huh? The 20th century? Let me explain. The show was made from 1959 to 1973 with each season having up to 35 one hour episodes. Now imagine the work that went into each show: horses, remote locations, buildings, number of actors.... I could go on and on. With that many episodes they were spitting out a show in 10 to 12 days. If you watch a Bonanza episode, just think about the effort it takes to make just one.

Compare the work and effort to make one of these shows in mid 20th century to that of today. Today maybe you have 13 half-hour episodes a year, no extras, no towns, no remote locations, no real work other then some simple cheap sets that never change nor do they ever leave an air-conditioned studio.

Just a different worth ethic. Now everything is for the quick dollar.

Granted there are some shows today that take some effort, but nothing like the shows of that era. Sort of like the way America is headed. Everyone wants something the easy way.

i always liked the show, thought it was better without him. funniest episode was with hoss and the leprechauns. he thought they were real, no body else could see them. turns out it was circus performers.

As I said before Roberts had a poor attitude toward the show and its fans. However, I think the show is much better for having Adam in it than without it. I thought it gave the show a quite of bit of balance to offset the plots where Hoss is depicted as a buffoon or the women are all over Little Joe.
Roberts was right in some of his concerns such as making sure minority actors played minority parts and making sure the show did not fall into the pattern of a simple shoot-em up Western.
I don't normally like to see parts recast and could not readily see anybody else take over for Roberts. I felt the show lost some its balance when Adam was written out much like when the Waltons lost Grandpa. It never had the same flavor for me. Roberts is a part of Bonanza history like it or not.

I liked the show, and still watch it now and then (have it all on German DVDs). Been watching it since the late 50s.

When Bonanza first started, the family was much different. Pa was a pretty hard and arrogant guy. But that only lasted for the first couple of episodes, and then writers softened him up a bit.

The first episodes had words to the song "Bonanza" sung by Lorne Greene when the show started. Johnny Cash also sung it and it was a hit at the time. The original opening soundtrack doesn't make it to any of the USA made DVDs. The German DVDs are the only ones that have true copies, that I know of. I'm not German, nor do I speak German. But, since Germany is the only place with true copies, I bought the whole series there. Then had to buy a multi-play, code-free, DVD player. All the episodes are in German as default, but click on a button and it then becomes the original English. It's kind of funny so see Hoss, Hop Sing, Little Joe, and even a few Indians speaking in German.

I see Hoss's son (in real life) on TV once in awhile.

I never missed an episode. Sunday night at eight on NBC. We only had two channels then and Bonanza was on one of them. I felt like something was missing when Adam left. Was Ed Sullivan on ABC at the same time as Bonanza? It's been awhile ago! Jim

If I remember (as a kid, forgive me if I'm wrong) he lived in a Winnebago which was parked in the hospital parking lot. Quite often him and another doctor would sit in lawn chairs on the roof of the Winnebago. The show was geared toward female viewers.....or people like myself who could only get 1 TV channel.
Really a pretty lame show, but I bet we'll be seeing reruns of it now.

Hoss was played by Dan Blocker. His son, Dirk, if I remember correctly, played a role as a F-4U Corsair pilot on the TV series, "Black Sheep Squadron". I"ve seen him a few times in other movies, but don"t remember which ones.

pernell roberts died yesterday. it said in the paper that he quit the show because he didn't like the script and it was stupid to have three grown men ask their father for permission to do anything. he was the last surviving member of the bonanza show.

1. Adams mother died in Boston, Hosses Mother died on the trip out west and Little Joes mother died on the ponderosa.

2.The ponderosa was supposed to be 1,000,000 acres.

Did you ever notice that the map is sideways? I also like how the can ride to town in a few minutes when it should have been an allday ride.

Still a great show.

Each boy had a different mother. Episode on each wife. First was the daughter of a sailing captain when "Ben" was still sailing. She died when Adam was born and Ben went west. His second wife died during the trip west after "Hoss" was born. Last wife was from New Orleans that Ben met during a trip (to sell furs?)and gave birth to "Little Joe" and she died.

in many episodes Little Joe got shot in the arm and he was always wearing his green jacket. He must have had a boatload of them because I never saw one patched up. And he must have healed quickly because he never had his arm in a sling.

Moral of the story? Get pregnant by Ben Cartwright and die.

Reminds me of once when I was in the Marine Corps. I was sitting in my room with the door open one evening, with an LP record of TV theme songs playing. The guy who lived next door to me walked past just as the "Bonanza" theme song came on.

He ran into his room and turned the TV on. He thought Bonanza was coming on for real.

Indians speaking German? Watch "Blazing Saddles" - opening has Indians attacking wagon train scene, the "black" family wagon is seperate from rest of wagon train, Indian chief played by Mel Brooks tells rest of attacking indians to let the schwartzes go - comments are in Yiddish. RN

Yes, seen it many, many times. When it first came out, and I was yound, I failed to see the humor in much it. Now I really get a kick out it, and strangley, have a lot of new respect for Mel Brooks.

pernell didn't own or live in the rv. It was owned by Gonzo Gates..Gregory Harrison. Pernell was too stuck up to go near it.

james, any idea what years these shows were, i grew up with bonanza but never saw these wonder if they are avaiable on dvd or something now, watched gunsmoke too first in b/w then in color, how many remember 'have gun will travel'? the virginian? high chapperell, wagon train, nothing today was as good as those shows were then

There was a show on for a year on one of those shortlived networks. The show was called Ponderosa. It was a prequil of Bonanza. Little Joe's mother was in the first episode when they first got there to homestead. She was killed in an explosion in that first episode.
Do any of you know what Hoss's real name was on the show?

Acording to that show,it was Eric. He got the nickname Hoss by Little Joe when he got bitten in the backside by a horse.

have Gun will travel was a good show, there was a marathon of it on a station a month ago. Man that old TV was good.

Micheal Landon (Little Joe) played the first bad guy that Steve McQueen shot in the "Wanted, Dead or Alive" TV series. And, he shot him in the back! I always thought that was a hoot.

A possible historical note on German speaking Indians/native americans: Supposedly(?) Sitting Bull didn"t learn English - didn"t want to learn enemy language- but when touring with Wild West show later in life was stranded in Germany with other performers when show company went bust, quickly learned enough German to get along with locals. A old minor trivia question perhaps?. RN.

Kinda off-topic, but related to the thread of old tv shows in general....we only got one or two channels then too, Bonanaza of course on one of them...Also watched the show "Adam-12" alot, about the two cops. For some reason, after "Adam" dissappeared off of Gunsmoke, my 4-year-old mind thought that he'd become a cop, thus the name "ADAM" in "Adam-12"....

In another example of how a young mind doesnt quite get everything, whenever the cops on the Adam-12 show talked on the radio, they'd sign off with "One-Adam-12,-Roger" Well, in my mind I heard that as being "what happened to old Roger"....there was an early episode where another cop on the show had died in a fire, and the cops name was Roger....so...whenever they said "One-Adam 12, Roger", I'd answer to the tv- "He died in a fire"! Oh, to be young again! Nowadays it's just bad hearing I can blame that kinda stuff on...

Hoss played football at Adams State college in Alamosa Colorado, I know a guy who went to school with him, he said Hoss was just like he was on TV

Sorry can't help. Within the last two years did see them but don't recall year or episode. In the early years the family was pretty aggressive even Hoss to a certain extent. Ben had a hot temper and shooting/killing was considered reasonable to settle a dispute. In the two shows covering Adam's and Hoss' mothers, Ben was much more reflective and wise, so had to be somewhere in mid-production when they were running out of new ideas. Also saw the episode where Ben met Little Joe's mother which was also not an early one, but didn't see how she died. Someone indicated that an earlier showed called The Ponderosa mentioned that she died from an explosion.

Where did you get the whole series? All I found was season 7 and 8 on Amazon Germany. I already have enough of the seasons one thru six. And where would I purchase a multi play code free DVD player? I'm really interested in seasons 7 thru 13. I have a grandson I want to share them with him. Would really appreciate a reply. Thanks

A site called IMDB standing for Internet Movie Data Base gives a person about all of the information a person could want on any movie, TV show, actor, actress, etc.

You can even search by plot in attempts to come up with the name of a movie or show.

I often check it before ordering a Netflix movie DVD.

There are many places in the USA that sell the region and code free players. They also run on dual formats, including the European PAL system. The units for sale are new, taken off the shelf, and converted. To make a region-free player, all you have to do install a reprogramed chip that costs around $10. But, to play European DVDs that are on PAL system, you need a DVD player with a built-in converter. You can buy a pretty good unit for around $80 that does both.

One place that has a good selection is:

As to where in Germany? I wound up getting mine from Amazon in Germany. The company the sells through Amazon is: http://www.pierrotlefou.de/

When I ordered, I had to use an on-line German-to-English translator to figure out what I was doing. USA credit card for payment was no problem and all went well. But, I WAS worried for awhile since translation was far from perfect.

I find out when searching for complete sets, start to finish, with original soundtracks. I found out that few if any companies do it in the USA because it's so costly. Sometimes you buy something in the USA advertised as complete, and it's not - especially the soundtrack. In Germany, there are less restrictions. Seems silly that I had to hunt in a foreign country for American TV shows, but that's the way business goes.

In the later years there was "Candy". He might still be on a Soap Opera, as Adam Chandelor.

Hoss's mothers brother, Told them as they were leaving town to go west, to name their baby Hoss.
After the baby was born, they were trying to decide what to name him and Adam reminded them that Uncle ???? had said to name him Hoss.

Hoss's mother died in an Indian attack at a way station, in that episode.

I was talking to some young people one time that was from De Kalb, TX.
I mentioned that De Kalb was where Hoss Cartwright (Dan Blocker) was born and is buried.

They said "[b:e23c2f2e4b][i:e23c2f2e4b]who is that[/i:e23c2f2e4b][/b:e23c2f2e4b][i:e23c2f2e4b]"???
They had never heard of him, nor had they ever watched Bonanza.
I was surprised and saddened by that.

As a llittle bit of trivia, Festus on Gunsmoke was one of the great singers on the Sons Of The Pioneers, along with Roy Rogers (Leonard Sly).
I heard Festus sing "I'll Bring You Home Again Kathleen" on a movie one time. Great singer, and who would have guessed it.

Bob Nolan, who also sang in The Sons of The Pioneers came from Bellisle right here in New Brunswick, Canada. We are kinda proud of him.
