OT has anybody used the Huskee 35 ton splitter

I've been researching building my own splitter for a few weeks now. I have the ability to do the fabrication, that is not a problem. A company named splitez seems to have the best kits to build your own, but a complete kit from them to build a 35 ton spitter (with honda motor), 5" cylinder etc everything except the steel to build the frame and mail beam rail is still around $2350, so $3000.00 before I'm finished and I have to build it.

I've considered building one and just running it off of the tractor's hydraulics, this would be WAY less expensive to build, but then I'd have to run a 100hp tractor to split wood and that seems a bit ridiculous. Or I could build one with a PTO pump and run it off my ford 3600, but then we are getting up in dollars again to make it as big as I want. Those pto pumps are pricey.

SO.... my question is has anybody used the Tractor Supply sold Huskee 35 ton splitter? My only real fear of it is that the main beam looks a little light. For something that is all ready complete and comes with a warranty, for $1800.00 it is starting to look like the deal.

Thanks for any input

Only thing I don't like about the store bought is they hang the controlls on the cylinder. I have had to weld the nipples back on a couple. Both had pipe nipples welded right to the cylinder. Both had cracked where the pipe met the weld.

KY Farm.Couple of questions because we Built a 30 ton spliter a couple of years ago.We have a 706 I.H. but decided against using it for mtg a splitter. 2 reasons. 1. had to drag it around with the tractor. 2. Had to lift the logs to the cradle.Got the cylinder from Hyd cylinder suplier
I beam from steel yard along with the pad and tank. Made the spliter vertical-horizonal,engine was a 10hp briggs, coupling and pump came from the same co that handled cylinder and couplings,Hoses made locally. Manufactured the toung with ball hitch. Wheels and axles came from the steel yard as well. All in all a much better unit and one heck of a lot cheaper.Did my own welding using 70 series rod. I"m not saying that tractor mount spliter is less desireable but what I wanted was to be free from hauling the tractor with the spliter around when helping others split their winters wood. Just something to think on . LOU

got any pictures you could put on here?

yes I agree that I don't want to have to use tractor everytime I split wood, at least not either of my two 100HP masseys, although that would be the least expensive to build, no hyd. pump and no engine.

I guess I could build a 3-point to hook to the big tractor and use it for a year and if I don't like that I could always modify and add a pto pump (for smaller tractor) or engine/pump combo later.......

HAve a pic of the spliter(distance away, but I will see if My son will take more close up pictures.I'ts in the shed covered over with bed liner suronded by snow. Will see if he will do it .will send em as soon as he wakes and takes em .Didn't have a camera at the time we built it. LOU.

Why do you think you need 100 hp to run a splitter?

Here's a pic of the splitter we built this year. I run it off my 65 hp (engine hp) JD 5303. Still need to try it with my Farmall 460. Cylinder is from a friend of mine, angled the blade on a big plow truck. Another friend supplied the chunk of beam & steel for the wedge and ram. Found some other steel for a 3-point hitch and legs. Had the hoses already, bought a couple adapter fittings.

It works great! It -maybe- a little slower than one with it's own engine, and you do have to push the hyd. lever to get it to go back (as opposed to a self-return), but for less than $30 investment, I'll take it any day over a store-bought $2000 model. It's split everything I've put on it, straight or knotty, never bogs the tractor. In fact, I keep the tractor just above idle, no problems.

Hmmm...hopefully this is the pic.

I have the husky 35 w/ B&S 12.5hp. I imagine that less will split most anything too, but I've put some huge logs on mine, has a bigger cradle and spitter than most of the small ones. I paid about $1500 a couple of years ago, ag no tax. TSC does have a tractor splitter for about $600 and the guy told me a three point pump was about $200.
If what you would built isn't going to be any more than the Husky, I would buy the Husky and go to splittin.

Senior moment. We do have pictures of our splitter we built .Hope these help Just helpful comment, you can watch Craigslist for a used lawn tractor with a good engine and use it for the log splitter. Some things (hydraulic parts, engines, pumps, valve) can be bought from Surplus Center out of Nebraska. The bigger the 2 stage pump and engine, the faster the cycle time, but you can only go so fast anyway, need power, not speed IMO.If we can be of any more helpful info, just ask.

Or, just build a simple 3 ph cantilever splitter like mine. It uses a 4X8 cylinder so it's faster than I am, strictly vertical so you don't lift any wood just roll it onto the base, lifts high enough to hook a wagon tongue under it and my 50 hp 2240 provides all the power it needs.

My brother and father have the Huskee 22 ton tow behind splitters and they work great. The 35 ton would be even better. I have a 3tp that runs off the tractor hydrulics, its is slow. But like you said the pto pumps arent cheap.

100 HP because that is all that I've got, a ford 3600 that only has an 8 gpm pump and two 100hp tractors each with 20+gpm pumps closed center, just nothing in-between

nice set-up you got there

I bought the 2-stage pump and control valve from Northern Hydraulics for this splitter. I used a 10 hp Craftsman Tecumseh on it that was off a Sears tractor. If I was building another I would use a 6-inch beam. My cylinder was a steering cylinder off the Army's 8 ton Goer sold at a government auction. It has split a lot of wood. Hal

I just bought the 35 ton log splitter from tsc this fall. And i love it for years i split my wood with a three point splitter behind the tractor. which worked fine but after getting the husky splitter from tsc I will never go back to the old way. its faster it uses less fuel and it is stronger.I have split some big peices of wood and it goes wright through it.they are built good and heavy. If I were you I would go buy the husky from tsc and be done with it. insteed of messing a round try to built one you will not be disappointed.

I have the Huskie 33 ton TSC splitter with the 8 horse Tecumseh motor that I bought used 6-8 yrs ago. It IS built a little heavier than the new ones. We probably do 8 cords a year, and have had only minor repairs with it. Works really well.
