im wanting to replace the deck on my tractor hauler wondering if i should put the boards tight against each other or leave a half inch gap or so so water can get down through i only use this to haul tractors and large round bales of hay thanks

If you use treated lumber put them tight together as treated lumber dries out over time and will have space between them.

If your using new pressure treated lumber I would recommend keeping them tight. In a seasons time they will shrink considerably giving you the gap you want.

The last trailer I decked i basicly beat the deck boards into place within the month i had a 3/8in gap. Put them in as tight as possible.

If you are just going to use it for hauling then paint treated lumber with a half and half mixture of diesel and oil (used works good). I put that on my wood grain truck floor. Sat outside all summer and shrank very little. Best to paint it before you put lumber on floor.

My son and I put a new floor down on our 28'
low-boy we used native oak that we bought from a friend of mine and we left a 1/4'' space between each board and it has lasted many years.

dan67, I had the same result that you did. A number of years ago I replaced my deck with the old green treated lumber and installed them as tight as I could. They loosened up as they dried out over time.

Looks like you have to let the lumber dry for a few months. No matter how tight you put the boards in, they will shrink and you will have gaps.

i plan on using regular construction lumber if treated properly will out last treated lumber and weight is an issue on this trailer as far as dot goes anyway i plan on painting the underneath of the boards with used motor oil might use a deck stain on top not sure yet dont want it slippery
