O/T-Morning Doves

We had some this morning too, first I've seen them in awhile. We're in a mild stretch of weather here, not sure if that has something to do with it.

They are around here all year. I think some one just started the rumor they migrate so the Feds can control the hunting of them.

Where I grew up in Maine they stayed all year. I always thought they were mourning doves because of the sound they make, but I don't know.

They are mourning doves, not morning doves, they migrate as necessary (we have them in Manitoba in the warm weather only). Certain people do hunt them, though I could never understand why.

Mourning doves here in SC year around. Hunting regulations about them interesting. There is a season a week or two long in the fall, maybe another one sometime, don't hunt them so not sure. You can't hunt over a baited field but doves don't show up in any numbers except over a baited field. Therefore, the legal way to do this is to plant brown top millet timing things so that the seeds are mature by hunting season. Then two things may be done. One, cut the field for hay and bale the hay a day or two before opening day. Doves will come to to get the seed shattered out on the ground. Or you can just bush hog the field knocking all the seed on the ground.

Another method is to plow the field and plant wheat heavily just before opening day.
some of the seed will be "spilled" on the ground during the planting process. If everything is done right there will be a crop of wheat next spring.

This was the procedure last time I had any information on it, rules may have changed, like I say, I don't hunt them.

they do make good eating.

Doves were in the feed lots all winter in the 50 and 60"s may still be in SE Iowa. Now The great state of Iowa list them as song birds so no shooting at the song bird. Now come over to Illinois and we shoot them in the fall difficult bird to hit unless you are good at trap or skeet. Always take about 100 rounds for an afternoon shoot may have some shells left? We have lived in this house (in town)30 years and have always had a nesting pair in the yard. Not the original doves. No cats, my dogs under the no part.

they are tasty. do you eat the whole bird or just the breast. when I was young my dad use to eat young pidgeons. We would take them out of the nest just before they could fly.

Yep - I remember going out at nite with Dad to raid the pidgeon coop for the young ones. If you know what to look for you can see back yard structures built years ago to house wild pidgeons. There is one in Batesville and I know of a huge brick one in Sandersville Ga.

Winter only (blue), summer only (light green), and year-round (dark green) range

Mourning doves - have them year around. Saw some at our bird feeder (on the ground) this morining.

Michigan tried to have a small experimental hunt a few years back. Do gooders stopped that in court and got a state wide referendum which shut down any hunts permantly. So much for "scientific game management" which is the law here in Michigan. I probably wouldn't hunt them, but stand for those who would.

There is a hunting season here in Az for mourning doves. They are fun to hunt because they are VERRY fast and it takes quite a lead to hit them. If you can hit dove consistantly then you can hit just about anything that flies.BUT, they are being crowded out by the collard dove which is an introduced , non native bird from the Indian subcontinent. They can be hunted also and there in no limit on them. Just as tasty too.
