A friend just purchased a 1951 JD g. It is gas, tricycle and has electric start, pto and hydraulic lift capabilities. Appears newly restored. Runs fine but after turning it off it won't restart! Gas is good, battery is new 9but may be too small as it appears to be a standard 12 volt battery).Where to start? After a delay it will start.

You may have lost your fire to your plugs. Pull off one of the plug wires asap when it won't start. Could be coil. Hal

Replace the coil and resistor with a 12 volt coil with an internal resistor. A cheap place to start and will most likely fix the issue.

Coils have primary and secondary windings. The primary are used to start and the primary may be damaged. When hot the wire will separate making the coil fail, but when shut off for a while close up and allow the engine to start again.

Good luck.

Did you open the cylinder petcocks before you tried to restart? They could be underneath the blocks instead of on the sides. Armand

A simple but often overlooked this is the plug wires. They need to be copper core wires. Modern wires are all resistor wires (keeps the spark in your car's engine from interfering with the radio).

If there are resistor wires there is not enough juice to make it fire well when starting. However once started there is probably just enough juice to keep it running.
