neat cleaning trick...

Maybe old news to some of you, but I saw a thing on TV today where they were cleaning equipment using dry ice and air. Ice was in a kind of tank with compressed air passing over/thru it. The hose/nozzle was blowing 175psi and some of the greasiest, dirtiest stuff was looking brand new with just a pass. Prolly a little more to it than that but didn't look like it.

I saw that being used to remove mold from the wood in an attic. Said it was real handy as the dry ice just melted away-left minimal mess! Greg

We made a little machine once that would rotate a container about the size of a milk can while the dry ice blasted the labels off of it. Something for a pharmaceutical place. Pretty slick way to polish some stuff up.

Real old news Dave, it has been common in the asbestos abatement and painting industries for years. It has been used on the Golden Gate Bridge for over 20 years. Dry Ice, or carbon dixoide, evaporates. Compared to sand blasting the amount of hazardous waste generated (think lead based paint) is reduced by a huge amount. Also, if you are cleaning up a old car or some other valuable metal the Co2 dosen't damage the metal like sand or steel beads do. Untill the green house gas people get it banned it is the way to go. I used it on my Jeep 715. Plus dry ice is so cool at my kids Halloween party.

Dave,

Don't know and I don't think so. I will check. I took my Jeep to a shop and the price was very reasonable. My asbestos abatement cousin owns one but I am sure it is to pricey for a homeowner. He can do thousands of square feet of asbestos containing mastic or vinyl tile in a day. I don't think, given the way it is set up it can do anything but floors.

Don't worry about it. If I decide I need something cleaned that way, there should be a place here that can do it.

Thanks

The foundry that I'm laid off from has been using it for years in place of sand blasting. Cleans the metal but doesn't erode it.

They use this process to clean residue off of molds for plastic parts.. Some of these molds are polished to a mirror finish and cost half a million.. The dry ice cleans, but does not scratch..
