Anyone noticed the new show called pickers. It involved two guys driving around and stopping at mostly farms, they would see from the road. These two guys would ask if the owner if he had anything for sale. If he did they would buy the items, mostly antiques at well below market value. Most of the time the old farmer didn't know the value. This reminded me of a couple guys who noticed a couple of Dad's tractors parked where they could be seen from the road. They offered Dad pennies on the dollar for two tractors and a horse drawn wagon. Dad having first stages of alzheimers didn't know the difference sold the stuff. I guess the TV guys aren't doing any thing wrong, like the guys who came by Dad's place, but some how it just don't seam right. stan

I was wondering if any body else noticed that.I didn"t think much of the way they did that either. Especially since it was a cold call. jstpa

Yes I saw it. They are con-men. Disgusting.
If they came around here I'd run the sonsabitches into the river. They also look like they are probably kweers.

Those guys are from LeClaire Ia., very close to my hometown. I think since this was the first show and it was in Iowa, they were "picking" at places in Iowa that were close to home and not cold calls.
They will soon be traveling to other states and I think those may be cold calls. Apparently from folks back in the area, they are pretty solid guys.
Just hate to see things like a saddle being bought for $75 and then "valued" on the show at $1500 plus......not good for seller or buyer or some of us who just like to "pick" as a hobby....not a business or TV show.

I agree it seemed criminal that they would buy something for 100 and turn around and sell it for 4000. While it isn't illegal it is unethical ripping these old people off. Shame on them.

Also shame on them for walking all over tractors. I could careless about crap signs they are finding. I want the tractors that they are stomping on.

Seen it. I wasnt thrilled how they made the people who owned the items look like poor idiots! Did anyone notice how many old tractors and trucks one gentleman had? Looked like he could have been a used parts dealer!

Yea,we talked about it on Tractor Tales yesterday. Good show. Makes me want to get back to my idea of selling the farm, buying an old motor home and becoming a flea market vendor.

Yep, I saw that as well, the interesting part was that I know the guy with the carnival stuff and drive by his place every day. The man with the tractors bought a tractor from my dad a few years ago. He still goes to auctions around here. Both are very nice men. It made me just a little uneasy.

I missed the show, but the promos for it got me to wondering about the ethics of it all too.

Grandma had a wind up wall clock, flea market guy bought it off her wall for $5.

I'm not happy with that sort of people.

I have always felt that if an informed person offers you something very cheap and it's not hot or something, there is no moral issue. The same goes for auctions. If you are the winning bidder it means you were willing to pay more than anybody else. What is definitely wrong but probably legal is when people offer uninformed folks a lowball price on something knowing that they are taking advantage of them. A lot of old people in our area have been cheated out of thousands of dollars of timber that way. There are certain timber buyers who people speculate how they are still alive. If they find out an old person is starting to get senile and their family is not close, they will move in.

I watched the show, and didn't think they were too bad in their dealings with the folks. Not a lot of arm twisting. The old guys were probably getting to the point where they knew there wasn't much point in keeping this junk any longer, and that their kids would appreciate any reduction in the volume of clean up needed after the funeral.

I did notice that once the ice was broken, and the seller actually consented to part with something, he seemed more willing to sell most everything they asked about. Sometimes price was too much, and they passed, as it should be. Or tried to negotiate a little, which I didn't consider out of line.

I like seeing the stuff they're out buying, but it doesn't seem right when they almost snicker when they resell the stuff for big profits. I'd think they'd be cutting their own throats if enough people see their show.
