Just this past Christmas I had bought my 3 year old son a John Deere model 70 pedal tractor, put the thing togther and he was happy as a lark. A couple days later I was putting it away for the night and the stearing shaft fell right out of the tractor(not somethig I put togeter but it came from the factory that way). So I called Ertl, complained a little they sent me a new one and told me to send the broke one back to them. Well I recieved my new one yesterday and as an excited 3 year old would be, I had to put it together last night, in the process of assembly the front axel/stearing assembly fell out of the new one just the same as the other. More calls and complaints today led me nowhere so far, thank God I still have mine from 25 years ago that he can ride that wa made in the USA the new ones say China stamped right on the bottom, I guess thats what kinda world we live in now. Any sugestions on what to do?

Not really. The whole Ertl/Racing Champions moving to China thing is what soured me on the whole farm toy collecting thing. I've still got the old Eska Oliver 88 pedal that I got for Christmas in 1956 and a couple of Ertl and Scale Model pedals that the kids had,but this whole China thing didn't sit well with me at all.

Bought my nephew an Ertl 4010 John Deere for his 2nd birthday this week. Within 10 minutes of carpet farming (and NOT roughhousing--he'd barely touched the tractor) a front wheel fell off. Stuck that on and the other one followed suit 5 minutes later. Turns out they're just pot-metal caps stuck on the ends of the axle. JB Welded them back on and hope they'll stay put. For what we paid for it, I'd expect something that could at least hold up to a bit of play--we've still got the Ford tractors we got for Christmas 35+ years ago, and those are being used by the 4th generation of kids!

Wasn't it just a couple of years back that or just a year that Army armstrong toured the plant and the guy was braggin up how proud he was that the toy tractors were still made in america?

I think i would just go out and find an old one. Some paint and it would be the best gift ever. Ours went through three brothers and still gets used by people who bring there kids to the shop. Age never seems to matter. Good luck. Steiger.

Forgive me folks but it runs in my mind a few years back maybe either late 80s or early 90s that the founder of or family of Ertl toys was big into tractor pulling running two magnificent Case IH Magnum Alky burning tractors in the SS class and all of a sudden he passed due to health reasons then it seemed Ertl kinda took a nose dive. It runs in my mind the gentleman moved from Dyersville to somewhere in Indiana. I"m guessing family members are looking at the bottom line. Oh Duh!

Same thing happened to my sons 4020 he received from Santa. 3 years old, nice huh?? The rivets have worked for years. Like anything else if its been working lets change it to something that doesn't.

Don't recall that. Two of the Ertl sons are still in the toy business here in the USA. One owns Scale Models, the other has Spec Cast if I'm not mistaken. The original Ertl Company was bought out by Racing Champions,I think was the name of the outfit, then production was moved to China.RC made die cast cars and trucks. About the same time, the editor of Toy Farmer Magazine died of a massive heart attack and the whole farm toy collecting hobby dried up pretty quickly.
You don't have that tractor pulling thing confused with Larry Roberts who owns R&L Trucking do you? He's still alive though.

Bet IAGary can weigh in on this one!
I've got some old Ertl tractors and the newer ones but, the Precision and Key series aren't bad! They aren't like the OLD ones you used to get - just more detail!

No, I know Larry Roberts of R&L this would have been more like mid to late 80s and it may have been the the Toy Farmers connection I remember this guy at Ft. Recovery showing up with the fancy semi trailer all painted up with toy tractors and they anounced who it was and they would immediately pull the sled out to the entrance gate even in the pulloffs. Then the next year I asked where they were and everyone said he died and that was that. Loss of memory is a terrible thing too many birthdays.:-<

THERE WAS A GUY WHO MADE ALOT OF CUSTOM TOYS IND. THAT HAD TWO PULLING TRACTORS NAMED COLEMAN WHEATLY.
THE TOY COLLECTING MAY BE DRIED UP IN SOME AREAS AND IN SOME AREAS EVERYTHING IS DRIED UP. IT DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE CLAIRE DYING. IT HAS MORE TO DO WITH THE QUAILTY OF TOYS AND THE NUMBER OF MODELS RELEASED AND THERE VARIATIONS. HOW MANY DIFFERENT 4020"S DOES A COLLECTOR NEED. THE REASON I QUIT IS BECAUSE MY COLLESTION WAS STARTED IN THE 70"S AND IN THE LATE 80"S ERTL STARTED REPRODUCING THE OLDER MODELS AND KILLED THE VALUE OF THE ORIGINAL TOYS. THERE STILL AT IT I HAD THE OLD 1/64TH STEIGERS, 2+2"S, 1086"S,AGRI KINGS, AND SUCH ERTL HAS REPRODUCDED THEM IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS.THE ONLY THING ERTL HAS NOT KILLED IS THE TIN FARM TOYS. BUT I GUESS I THE CHINAMEN CAN STAMP STEEL THAT MIGHT BE NEXT.

A good friend of mine twohouses down is in charge of shipping at the plant--been there for a long long time. He is probably in bed by now, but I can perhaps help ya out if you would like.

Nothing is certian in life, but I think alot of information on this post is very inacurate.

Joe, and John are both friends of mine, and I could ask for a low down if anyone is interested. They are very common folks, but often very busy.

My friend in shipping says it takes like 11 months for a order to get to the plant, so next years x-mas china junk is probably ordered already.

Quality and China do not go hand in hand, I purchased several tape measures on sale at Menards. I challanged two of my workers to remove them from the packaging without breaking the belt clip. One did it so I gave him the new tape measure, he tried to put it on his belt, and the screw fell off the belt clip and dropped the tape on the ground.

Think about this when you get behind the wheel--what parts are from China?
