OT-Roadside Assistance when Towing

Looks like I might be taking a 1000 mile road trip coming up. On the return trip I may be pulling a trailer, so I want to plan ahead in case I have any problems...
Whats the best way to get road side assistance if you break down? I dont have AAA and I am not big on paying membership fees. Is there a directory number you can call from a cell phone? What do the truckers do? I regularly see trucks on the side of the road with a service truck parked near by. How do the truckers find these guys?
Thanks

Hire a good looking girl with a short skirt to ride shotgun. Then, if you break down, you go hide in the trailer while she just stands on the shoulder. You'll have plenty of help in no time.

We have towing/roadside assistance through our car insurance company. Very, very cheap and it goes where you go whether you"re 5 miles from home or 1000 miles. 24/7, you call the number, they get your location and they call the wrecker. Will even send the cops if you"re not in a safe location.

First 13 miles(nearest repair facility) are at no charge to you. If you request your vehicle to be towed someplace further, you have to pick up the fee for the additional mileage over 13 to where you want your vehicle towed.

Big catch - If you call for a wrecker (roadside assistance) and you have a trailer, be sure to tell them that. Be aware that no matter what roadside assistance you call, they may not tow the trailer.

We have Onstar in my wife's Tahoe. Never thought about it until we had a flat one cold, rainy night. My wife hit the button, the operator came on, and 10 minutes later a service truck showed up, put the spare on, and we were on our way. The service guy's truck has gps, they gave us a ETA that was accurate to the minute. Way better than AAA. I think it's $149 per year. Outstanding service, for a little money.

This website is pretty good. You might have to make you a list before you leave but it has pretty much whatever you want.

Nancy is right. You should check with your insurance company to see if you have roadside assistance coverage. My auto insurance has that coverage and I have used it 2 or 3 times. As Nancy stated, the insurance company can locate a towing or roadside service company near your location, but will usually only pay for towing to the nearest repair facility. This varies from one insurance carrier to another. Mine will pay towing up to 25 miles. Since I do my own repair work, I had the towing company tow my car to my home each time and paid the incurance did not. Best thing is to ask your agent and find out what your coverage actually is. Good luck on your trip. I hope you have no troubles.

We broke down in Indiana about 30 miles north of Louisville ,we just called our ins company they sent a wrecker towed us to a shop installed a new u joint and we were on our way 4 hours later on a late saturday evening .add it to your auto insurance fast as it's cheap and worth a zillion bucks when you need it .

Check your GPS, or check out a GPS unit. I know mine (Magillan Maestro) will tell ya local (near current location) towing companies and give you a phone number. No way of knowing the reputation of the company but if your on the side of the road sometimes beggers can"t be choosers.

If I remember correctly, towing through your insurance co is only a couple of dollars more per vehicle. It's about the cheapest insurance you can buy.

I have AAA RV Plus which covers all my vehicles and trailers.
Gives me and Aunt Ernie lots of peace of mind when one of us is on the road which is Often.
