OT Medicare Part B

Just got my package in today. To apply for medicare in May. Does anyone have part B and is it worth it. Gonna cost me 110.00 a month and if I need to join the drug program. That will be even more money. I am on disability and that is money I really can't afford. But according to the Gov. I am doing just fine since the cost of living has not gone up. Guess they have not been to the grocery store and gas station lately.

I won't say any thing about the drug program. Medicare part B is the best thing you can ever get. No question about it. Get it as fast as you can.
They charge me about 96 dollars a month and pay 80 percent of the bill. Private insurance companies charge me 187.50 to 260 dollars a month for the other 20 percent. See what a bargain it is. Oh, did I say my ICD was $168,000.00? Not including room rent for a day.

Mines 96.00 a month and it's better than nothing ,but I am also on my wifes ins at work so that picks up the 20% medicare does not cover .

I have it. Costs me $98 a month. I also have a BCBS supplement with drug coverage that costs another $58 per month. Then, the VA backs it all up.

I'd considered scrapping it and just sticking with the VA as I'm rated 40% disabled and happen to live 25 miles from an outstanding VA outpatient clinic. But, there's a loophole that a VA rep pointed out to me.

Say I had a heart attack, or something equally dire, and went to the ER at a local hospital. The local hospital would stabilize me or do whatever was necessary to keep me alive and kicking, and then call the VA. The VA would take over at that point and elect to either transfer me to a VA inpatient hospital or simply leave me at the local hospital with the VA picking up the tab. The catch is, I would be responsible for any costs incurred between the time I arrived at the hospital and the time the VA took over. And in the event of a heart attack, emergency surgery, or whatever, those first few hours can cost many thousands of dollars.

Right now, I'm kinda waiting to see what our glorious Congress is going to cobble together. For my part, I'd as soon they didn't do anything. Right now, I know what my options are and what they cost me, and basically I'm cool with it.

I have Medicare part B plus I have drug coverage through my Advantage plan. I believe that if you don't sign up for it right away and want to later it will have a higher cost.
Part B info

Billy,

You probably know this, but here goes anyway.

Part A is hospitalization. There is no charge for it.

Part B is doctors. The rate just went up to $110.00 per month (a 15% increase over last year). You can have it deducted from your Social Security payment or you can pay for it directly. I think you have to pay three months at a time if you pay for it separately. There are co-payments on the doctors' bills and there are limits on the total coverage. That is per person, by the way. If your wife is to be covered, she also pays $110.00 per month.

Part D is prescription drugs. You pay for it. You select an insurance plan that is one of the ones that Medicare approves. There are co-pays and only certain drugs are covered.

The net of all that is, there are no simple yes or no answers about Medicare. It is complicated and you need to study it thoroughly before you make any selections.

There are also supplemental insurance policies available on the open market to fill the gaps that Medicare coverage doesn't provide. I carry a supplemental policy on my Part B medicare coverage.

Good luck on your choices.

Had heart problems in Dec after I started Medicare in May. Took the part B (about 100 a month) then have the suplment with Blue Cross
for about $135.00 per month. Stayed in hospital
23 days and total bill was over $131,000.00
Was not out one dime..so now I don,t even look at all the offers I get in the mail or on phone.
Pretty good deal for me.

You need it. You need a suppliment with part B. Then You also need part d (drugs). I am a pharmacist & see people who don't take it, Then come out of the hospital with a long list of expensive prescriptions. I tell people you don't need car insurance till you have a wreck, or house insurance till it burns down.

The first thing they should be looking at is the cost structure. justify $5695 a day.Sure you wasn't in one of those banks that Obamy is het up about?

I fully agree with the rest. I would suggest the J plan, I too am on disability, and would not be without it. Good Luck, Gary

Medicare is a government sponsored health care program-the very thing so many of the contrubutors on this site are against.

I"ll add this:
I get my prescription drugs from the VA
Cost is $8 for a one month supply, or $24 for a
90 day supply. AND, you get NAME BRAND drugs, no
generics! The VA pharmacy just slaps a VA label
over the regular name brand label. If I am at the
VA Hospital, 40 miles away I can pick up my prescriptions at the pharmacy. I can also phone, or order on the computer, and shipping is free.
Last year the AARP magizine ran an article on
drug plans and said that if you were a Vetern,
the VA drug plan was better than any other plan.

Billy, You need to find a better source of information. No offence here, but these are tractor guys. I am seeing the terms "Part" and "plan" thrown around as if they are the same.

Medicare has various "Parts"

Medicare supplements (private insurance) has different "plans"

You are going to get confused real quickly. A good insurance agent, should be able to explain the supplements.

There should be some sort of independent, non government group in your area that can help you decipher the government part.

Good luck, Gene

GeneMO I am already confused. They send me this small package and then tell me they will send more information later. I was just trying to find out how the plan is working for people on it. I am a vet so I will be asking how that will work with this system. The problem I have and I am sure others do to. My county has no hospitals or doctors in it. The nearest hospital is 55 miles away. The nearest VA hospital is 130 miles. I still have until April to enroll. So I will have lots of questions for someone. Thanks to all that answered

It may be. But at least I don't have to take it if I chose not to. What the nnalert and external_link are saying is you will take our plan reguardless of what you want.Just heard this morning the Labor unions cut a deal on the health care they will get. So much for external_links promise not to deal with special interest groups.

Lgc Thanks I know all to well about the drug cost. My wife had terminal cancer for five years before she died. What the insurance did not cover we had to. Some months it took a whole paycheck to cover them. And I was making very good money.

I've had government health insurance since 1960.
I kept it when I retired and I can change plans if I want to in the month of Nov when they have an open season. I'm a Korean vet and I can use the VA too. Hal

3 cyl, It may be government program but it seems like I was forced to pay into it while working and now I am going to try and get some of my money back.

Hello BillY Shafer,
What you should do is go down to the Social Security office, and let them give you the advice you need for your situation. My neighbor just went down last November, and they set him up. They WILL help you as well, they do work for the tax payer................... you and me.
Guido.

A 10 minute visit to the doctor will cost me 147.00 here.I hadnt been to the doc for 10 years then my health failed. You need part B ...
