boring holes in steel with an arc welder

I used to have a book that told how this is done but can't find it. I know to crank the amps way up but what rod works better? 1/4" steel plate.
Thanks

They make gouging rods, but 6010 and 6011 are deep penetrating and will work fine on 1/4".

Use 6010 with DC only. But 6011 can be used with DC or AC.
Of course, for punching holes, it probably doesn't matter.

Back in high school, when we were learning how to weld I think the whole class had good luck with boring holes in what ever we tried to weld.
(Or was that burning holes) :D

For a quick chop rather than drag out the cutting tourch I just crank up the welder and use a 1/8th of what ever is handy. If I think ahead I drop a coupla welding rods in a can of water. That seems to cut a little more with a rod.
We kept a hand full of rods in water for cutting out weld around high pressure pipe fittings for rewelding when we run low on what we called blow rod.

6010, dunked in water, high amps. But don't rush out to buy 6010 if you have 6011 on hand. If you do have a DC machine, use electrode negative.

I hear ya!!
I still do that sometimes.

6010 or 6011(AC) work pretty good at higher amps for blowing holes because they don't have as much slag to get in the way and burn through it easier. Dunking them in water first isn't a bad idea since the coating can catch on fire. Dave
