Chains make such a difference!

Finally got the new chains thrown on the tires today, as it was so mild out. Hooked up the recently purchased snowblower at the same time to see what the old beast would do. What a nice surprise: I didn't get stuck and the snow went flying! Shear pin is only 5/16". Can I use a grade 8 bolt for that?
 
No, grade 8 is a hardened bolt, you need to use a softer grade so it will share if you hit something.
 
You may be able to use use a grade 5 bolt though. It may have had a grade 2 in it . Grade 2 has no marks on the head, grade 5 has 3 marks , grade 8 has 6 marks.
 
You need to have that shear pin be the weak link and break if you hit a rock or something. You dont want to break the auger do you?

Tire chains are essential in heavy snow and ice.
 
I hope you're right. I just pryed out 200 bucks for a set.
As for the shear pin... Don't leave home without it!!!!

I take it you are having issues with shear bolt breaking too often? Is the hole worn? do you have the nut securely tightened? Is the bolt in position where the place that shears is in the threads? If the hole is worn a grade 8 bolt would probably give about the same protection as a soft bolt in a tight fit. On the other hand I do not know what the manufacturer recommends.
 
Last summer on our baler I found that the NH shear pins were much stronger than the bolts I had on hand and was using because the shear pins only had the very end threaded. I was surprised by how cheap the brand name pins were, and now I only use them.

Grade 8 will resist shearing to the Nth degree. If it has a 5/16 bolt in it, there is probably a reason for that. I would use 5/16 grade 2, unless it gives you continual trouble. Then, after extensive thinking about how you run it, I MIGHT think about a grade 5, but you need to be careful. Bottom line is NEVER a grade 8.
