parts tractors

Bought a jd A on an online auction that didn't run. Got it home and tore into it and found the left piston skirt broken along with the block skirt. Talked to a guy about welding the block skirt together and sticking a sleeve in the cylinder until I saw an ad on craiglist. I called the guy on CL who told me he had a complete tractor that he was parting out and would sell me the list of parts I needed (block, pistons/rods, etc.) for $200.
I asked him what was wrong with the tractor that he was parting out and he said nothing was wrong with it, it was worth more for parts than a complete running tractor! Makes me wonder if I should just part out the one I've got.

NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It totally kills me to see people part out any tractor for almost any reason, there are exceptions but if they are in useable shape some one will want it.

THEY ARE NOT MAKING ANY MORE and I dont even care for JD!

I have ranted on this subject here before. It breaks my heart to see a "good running" tractor being parted out because the wheels were bad or some other dumb reason." Worth More in parts than Whole" .I dont think so. Not every part will be sold. Only a few parts will be sold, the rest will be scrapped after they sit around for a few years. Why not give someone a chance to give it a new life.It is just wrong !!

There's a couple salvage guys on Ebay that part good running tractors. It just shows who has a love for the hobby and who's in it for the money. It pains me to see it, but as long as money is involved, that's gonna happen. I have a rough tractor that's worth at least twice in parts than it is complete, but I still can't bring myself to start tearing in to it.

Parting out a tractor is not easy, and most of your customers will complain.
The guys on this site, and your local vendors, make the hobby possible, not cheap.

A couple of years ago there was an auction on Ebay for a decent looking, running JD B. It didn"t sell the first time, seller lowered the reserve and ran the auction again. Still didn"t get his reserve and the price wasn"t out of line. A couple of weeks later he started auctioning the parts because he hadn"t been able to sell the complete, running tractor.

Hate to see it, but that"s the way it is. Only consolation is that when one is parted out several others are returned to running condition.

Where do you suppose those good parts come from that you need to restore your old one? One has to die now and then so how many more will live on.

All depends on what your objective is. For me, my tractors earn my living. When I buy one to 'fix up' I have a dollar figure in mind as to what its worth to sell. When I hit 2/3 of that on fixing it up I chop it up for parts. Now, to make that work it has to have some parts value. 460-560 IH have been the best to me, they almost always part as much or more than they are worth whole. JD, there is a bunch of them out there and JD has good support for new parts, Ford has a wealth of made in India aftermarket parts. So I dont try to buy either of them needing a lot of work.

Well I have several tractors that For Me I wont Fix Because the Cost of Fixing Some are CASE Big 600,spun bearing, big 400's/700/830's/1030/870's/970's/1070/1370/2670/2870/2090/680's.back hoe's/several Case comebines 660-906-1160/there are other makes & models we have, some were bought as tractors with problems, for some parts for us,some just need some motor Repair.and will sell, with Dairy Cows just never seem to get the time.Around here Tractors are Replace able.I have thought of Parting some of these out ,by useing E-bay ,Just hate to start Tairing apart Fixable Tractors that only need a few small items replaced to be put back in service.

It doesn't pay to part out worn out tractors. The parts the will be most in demand will be worn out and not good for resale.

Yeah, I hear you. I have a real nice clean hand-start A with the motor tore down becuse someone let it freeze. I've got the head rebuilt but it would be stupid to put it back together. It is more valuable in pieces. I am still torn though because nice ones are hard to find.

You probably belong to the fringe group, Tractor Witnesses.

They claim we're all going to Hell in a parts basket unless we seek to save all the tractors.

Well brother, many are called, but few are chosen, and Tractor Hell has increased it's borders to hold all those poor departed machines. But have faith..they'll be resurrected as something new and useful....behold the old things are passed away and all things become new, therefore that which is scrapped in junkiness is raised in newness....and so forth.

Get over it.

Do you have pics of the 400's you could email me. How many do you have? Any diesels? What are they needing to run? How much you looking to get out of them?
