354 Perkins questions

A friend of mine purchased a 354 Perkins engine to replace one that had thrown a rod in a White tractor, but he said that he could not get the replacement engine to line up with respect to the pressure plate, but I have few details beyond that. Does anyone know of variations in this engine?

" Variations in this engine" Get serious!.What model White? Serial number would help too. White (and Oliver) used 5 different versions of that engine. On the old engine(maybe depending on age) by the injection pump the engine serial number and depending on age there will be a "build number". Same should be true of the replacement engine. How about more details?

my experience is from the other end of the engine- there are a bunch of varieties of 354s, as i found out when i needed a water pump for my fox chopper. the pump on my massey combine was different, and there were more alternative choices, the farther i went.
this won't help your friend get his engine working, other than to say its an easy mistake to make.

Yea,don't we know it J,but if it's just the pressure plate,it would about HAVE to be that he didn't use the flywheel from the original engine. The pressure plate should have bolted right back up to the one that it came off of. If it's a clutch alignment problem, just use a deep well socket that fits tight in the pilot bearing and the center hole in the clutch before he tightens the pressure plate/
Tell him to be careful to use the bolts that go with the original flywheel. Flywheel thickness varies, and if the bolts are too long, they can go all the way into the aluminum housing that holds the rear main seal and crack it. Ask me how I know.

It's a 2-105. I'll have to talk to him some more and find out the particulars on the replacement engine. I think he assumed that the engines were pretty much standard. We purchased a 2-105 this weekend and I'm struggling with the 3 point lift right now. My friend has offered to sell me his for parts, but I'd hate to see a good tractor parted out if he can get the engine to fit.

I have swapped out quite a few Perkins from
White to Oliver over the years. rrlund touched
on using and aligning the old flywheel. I think
you might have to make some different mounting
brackets on the front of the engine. My e-mail
is open if you can post the number on the
block boss J. mentioned.

Not only that the early 2-105 tractors used a dot 1 engine the later ones a Dot 4. Have you put a cylinder on your new purchase to try if they work? Do you have a 3000 PSI pressure gauge? J.

I haven't had the chance to put a cylinder on it yet but that was going to be my next attempt. I posted it in another thread, but here's what I ran into today - I opened the bleeder on the filter and nothing came out. I took the plug out of the bottom of the pump and a small amount of fluid that was full of air came out of it. With the engine not running and the plug out of the pump fluid with air bubbles came out of the bleeder. The pump was recently replaced according to the owner's hired man and it has a new coat of blue paint. The steering works halfway decent and the brakes work well if that makes any difference. I really appreciate the help.
