Gear reduction power steering?

I was talking today to a man who said he saw some sort of planteary gear setup for power steering. Instead of the hydraulic type, I have never heard of this before. Does anyone have any experience with this type of setup? How well do they work? Do they still make them?

Boston gear corp. (online) has small gear boxes that would fit the task. All they would need is to splice the box into the shaft (as would a Hydro unit), and add a stabilizing strut to keep it from spinning. Ratios of 2:1 would make it 1/2 as hard, but require twice the wheel turns. Like winding a 3 dollar pocket watch. JimN

The way I understood it it would fit inline with the steering shaft, maybe like the one on the 240 you saw. Only reason I am wondering it is a novelty to me. Although power steering of some sort would be welcome on my m with a loader, especially since we have had 30" of snow this year all with 40 mph winds. There is 300 acres of bean stubble all around me and my house and trees are the only thing stopping the snow for 1/2 mile. Can't wait for spring

they put them in race car on dirt tracks but back wards so they turn the wheel les times i had one in me it was hard to turn when you were stop

Two aftermarket versions WERE the "Sherman Shock Proof Steering"...

and the "Kosch steering aid".

Greg:

Keep in mind that these steering assist devices are not "power steering" but rather gear reduction mechanisms. What you gain in reduced steering effort is traded off against a corresponding increase in steering wheel motion.

Henry Ford used these on all Model T"s.
It is located just under the steering wheel. I drive my 1917 T whenever the weather is warm.

Time to plant some rows of trees. If the wind is blowing snow, it's also blowing soil. Plus the trees will drift that snow away from you buildings.
