0T: 03 passat oil filter removal

It's getting time where I'm gonna have to change oil filters again on my car, and although last time I got it after some finagling, I'm wondering what a guy is actually "supposed" to do to reomve the filter on my car. I got it out last time through the top, with a couple scraped fingers, oil all over, and all in all not a very pleasant experience.

Got synthetic oil in it, got about 5,000 miles on it (recommended interval) and plan to change filters and run it for another 5000 or so before bringing it in for some normal maintnance like the timing belt at 80,000 miles. Probably the water pump while in there as well.

Take the plastic shield off under the engine that covers the entire front end of the car and you can get to it better.

Had to do that when I changed the oil- no dice on the oil filter. Couldn't find a good way to get it from the bottom. I'm wondering more if I don't have to remove soemthing else to get to an access panel.

I used to access them by removing the 3 screws on the overflow bottle and flopping the tank over to the side. Getting oil over the subframe is a given..

p.s im assuming you are refering to the turbo motor not the v6 or tdi :)

I take the filter out the top by moving it toward the radiator, then up and out in front of the big rubber hose. Not easy, but the hose flexes to get the filter out. With the filter mounted at an angle, you always spill some oil. I usually put a few paper towels under the filter before talking it off. I always take off the plastic shield under the motor to drain the oil.

I use Mann filters that I order from germanautoparts.com. They're better quality, and have a lug on the bottom that you can put a screwdriver across to loosen it. I order a half dozen filters once a year so I have one on hand when it's time. I always use synthetic valvoline. Used to use 5w-40, but last time I changed to 5w-30 because it's easier to find. Got 180k on my 2000 1.8L Passat, hoping to go past 200k before trading cars.

I put a timing belt in at 75k, and another at 140k as preventive maint., along with new water pumps.

I guess it's good to know I'm not missing anything then. As far as oil, I used Rotella 5w-40 oil for Turbo Diesels. Was the only 5W-40 I could find, but figured it would be alright. Atleast my car has the turboed part....
