whats the typicle horsepower rating per moldbord im asking this because if you take say a jd a which is a three plow tractor and beef it up with powerblock and other things get it up to around 80 or 90 horse and can keep it cool what would she pull then obviously more than a 3-12 plow but enough for a 4 or 5 bottom? or not of course weight would also be a problem but that could be cured with ballast or weights

If you where to beef up a JD A to say 75HP and then tried to use it for true farm work it would probably not last a year. Ya it might in fact pull say a 4-16 but not for long since one beefed up like that is done for short runs/pulls only and will pop a cork if used for say 10 hours a day

pulled 3x16 behind a stock A on 300 acres, but you had to have a water supply on both ends of the field.

you may be right about an A not lasting that long but I have a neighbor that has a late styled G putting out 90 horse. He also has a 4010 and the G can outplow the 4010. He has had the G since he built it up over 20 years ago when he lived in Ohio. He just cash crops so it doesn't get used for thousands of hours but it is still together at that horse.

In my tough soils I need 21 hp per bottom, on 16 inch bottoms.

Many can get by with 16-18 hp per bottom on lighter soils.

I have 136 hp tractor pulling a 4-18 plow, and it's a nice match. Sometimes I can drive fast. Sometimes the front end gets light & it pulls pretty hard in a lower gear. The joys of hard clay....

By the time you spend all the money to get 80 out of the A John Deere just get a tractor that will pull 4 bottoms.

Soils vary. Weight of tractors vary. Lots of factors, but in general, around here, using rated PTO HP of the tractor, and general purpose bottoms:
1.1 HP per inch for 14 inch bottoms at 7 inches depth.
1.25 HP per inch for 16 inch bottoms at 8 inches depth.
2@14 inch = 30 HP
3@14 inch = 46 HP
4@14 inch = 62 HP
2@16 inch = 40 HP
3@16 inch = 60 HP
4@16 inch = 80 HP
