Southern horses

Here's a question for you Texans and other southerners. My daughter bought a mare in Houston, from what we know the horse never left the Houston area all its life. So if we bring it to Iowa, say in the spring, will nature naturally bulk up that horse when winter comes or will we have troubles with it when it gets cold? Like to breed it to a good stallion we have up here but don't know if we'll take it back to Texas. If it stays here it will have to run with the rest of the herd in conditions like we're having now.

Doug, Not exactly a Southerner unless southern Manitoba counts.
Some years ago we acquired a mare born and raised locally, summers outside, winters in heated barn. Her first winter here (outside) she grew an inadequate winter coat and suffered so that we had to blanket her.In the many winters which followed she grew a heavy coat and we never saw her shiver again. Hope this helps

My uncle here in KY sold a team of Belgians to a guy in Maine one spring. The guy who bought them told my uncle that they did fine durring the summer but didn't put on a good coat, he had to keep them in the barn the first winter. The second fall they were there they got as fuzzy as any localy raised horses. Don't know much about horses but have heard this story from my uncle.
