Radio died in 94 Ranger?

My 94 Ford Ranger has been sitting for a couple weeks but I hopped in it the other day and the radio/stereo is dead. Would cold weather affect it? I checked and all the fuses are good. I didn't see an inline fuse on the stereo, it's aftermarket and was hoping someone would have an idea. Also, how do you remove the dash panel around the stereo? I tried looking on the net and it appears you can just pull it off. Is this correct and is there a certain technique? I didn't see any screws holding it on. Thanks in advance. Dave

Yes you can pull the trim bezel that goes all the way round the dash. Its about an inch or so wide. I think u have to pull the ash tray out.
Just be patient with the bezel and what ever pops apart. The oem radio has a hole in each corner about and 1/8th inch in diameter that you have to put a small piece of wire in each one to just the right depth to release the latch...its an anti theft measure. With yours being an aftermarket I dont know about that, it could just slide out or have latches on the side. Get down to the radio and post back if you have any problems. Hope this helps and good luck.

Guys at therangerstation.com can probably help you. Check in the technical section, may even have how to remove dash, but I think on that model it may have a hole in each corner you slide a wire about the size of a coat hanger in to release latches and it slides out forward.

Just remember one thing please warm truck up with heater or put in garage before pulling on trim bezel !!COLD EQUALS BRITTLE !!learned the hard way.

you do have to remove the ash tray cause there are two bolts on either side of it. i believe that your truck has the pull out knob for the lighs be carful with that i broke mine on my 95 f-150 and they are expencive. my radio dose the same thing but then clears up when the vehicle warmed up so i am guessing its someting to do with the cold. good luck

The ash tray is gone anyways. I guess some aftermarket stereo's have a fuse on the back of them. I'll see what I can do. Thanks guys. Dave

135 Fan,

Does your radio have a push button on and off ? I take it by aftermarket , you don't mean factory. My radio went dead in my old 87 Grand Am after I let it set a while , turned out to be the push button on / off switch wasn't making contact.

What brand aftermarket radio? many of them have tiny slots for their special radio removal tools to go into. You can but the tools online, or if you swing by your local radio shop, they will usually go out and pop the radio loose for you for free. Usually when i shop does a favor like that for me, i then go back and buy a radio from them I usually price around while i'm there so I have an idea for their prices. What i have also done is buy the same brand radio and with the new radio you have the tools to remove the old one. I cant think of one brand that has changed types of removal tools over the years. Check out www.installer.com they also sell the tools to remove the radio. If they dont have it give dwane a call over there and he will help you out.

Cold will effect the LCD screen on radios . The instruction book on my Clarion CD player in my truck says that cold air will cause the display ( screensaver ) to move slow ( sluggishly ) . until it warms up . But other than that ,cold should'nt bother anything mechnical . Yes , there is a fuse in the harness of radios that are nonstock from factory, such as my Clarion. There are usualy two nowdays , one for the 12v main and one for the 12v secondary side.
