Coolant heaters

On the internet I find a tank type coolant heater, 1500 watts and for coolant capacities over 30 qts for $50.00.

I call my John Deere dealer and they are asking $140.00 for their tank type heater.

Which should I go with? Is the John Deere heater really that much superior? Is there a well regarded, popular heater for considerably less money than the John Deere heater?

The magnetic block heater is appealing in that I think it would make the tractor look less "cluttered" but I believe the tank type is what most prefer and do the job faster and more thoroughly.

By the way. If you'd like to see the tractor I'm restoring I submitted it to this group yesterday in the Tractor Photos section. 1967 5020 John Deere.

No the Deere heater is not that much better. And the gallon rating really is not that important either. A tank heater will have a built-in thermostat and shut itself off once it gets hot. The bigger you use, the faster it can heat the engine up. But, the bigger you go, the better the extension cord has to be. 1500 watt is a good general size. I've got a 2000 watt on little 144 c.i. IH diesel tractor. Not because I needed it that big, more because I just happened to have the heater on the shelf. To the converse, my 3-53 Detroit has a 750 watt heater and it takes a long time to warm up.

You should have it on here. I would go with the 50.00 tank heater. I wouldn't worry about the looks as long as it starts. Hal

I have always been under the impression that a soft plug heater or some other sort of in the block heater is better than a tank heater, and that tank heaters are better than lower radiator hose heaters.

jdemaris,

What size extention cord for a 1500 and 2000 Watt heater?

Can you get one with too many watts and do damage?

Thanks,

Don

El Toro,

Thanks for posting my picture here. After a bunch of work to get it looking much better I am sensitive to adding something that kind of detracts. Still fit-up on the sheet metal to do.
Opposite side, of course !

Just a good ole tractor that I love to hear run.

$140. does seem rather high, but it IS designed exclusively for your application and is furnished with a mounting bracket for a "factory installed" appearance. The $50 generic heater will get the job done, it just won't look as nice.

Don't know who sells them now or if the company is still around, but my 3010 came with a "Hot Shot" heater. It seems to be a much quicker heat than the other 4 tank heaters on other tractors.

With a 1500 watt heater, you can use a 14 gauge cord that's 100 feet long, but there will be less waste (and a cooler extension cord) with 12 gauge.

The 2000 watt heater with a 12 or 14 gauge can only be run 15-25 feet.

Extra size isn't going to damage anthing. They are thermosat controlled. In a worse-case scenario, if a heater overheated, is would burn itself or just trip its own circuit breaker. It's not going to hurt the tractor.
