Computer question

When I plug in a UBS drive I get a loud snap
as in static electrictiy and it shuts the computer down. When it restarts everyting works
normal. What is wrong? Thanks

If it shuts the computer down, apparently you had it running when you plugged in the USB drive. That's a no-no- should never plug in anything with computer running. At least, that's what I've always been told. And when it comes to computers, believe me, I always do as I'm told.

It sounds like you have either a shorted USB drive or connector. You CAN plug in USB devices on the fly. Does it work O.K. in another computer?
Check both USB plugs on the drive and the computer for foreign material. I've seen gum wrappers get stick in the ports. You PC should monitor the power applied to the USB ports and warn you when one is drawing too much power. You may have a PC power supply issue.

a few other questions come to mind.

Are you using a USB port on the front of the PC,BACK of the PC or on another device such as the monitor or keyboard?

When it reboots does the drive show up as normal?

Mike, that was very true before USB ports and embedded software programs. Nowadays, you can plug in a UBS from various devices such as a printer, MS already has the software preloaded to run the most popular devices. It will find the software, load it if it is not loaded already, and then let you know the device is ready. When done, you can leave it plugged in or unplug it. Very usefull on lap tops that move around or travel.

Don't, but if its static touch the case first.

Do you have any other computer that you could plug into and see if does the same. Don't use a friend or family anything that happens to there computer from then on will be your fault.

730 is correct, USB was designed to be plugged and unplugged without shutting off the computer.

you just want to be sure the computer isn't actively writing or reading to the device, windows includes a little icon on the right side of the task bar you can click and tell it you want to remove a usb device and it will stop it and tell you its ok to remove it. computer won't be harmed if you don't do that, but the usb device might be. mostly applies to those little usb memory stick things.

I knew that- just seeing if anyone was paying attention! LOL

Actually, I've pretty much given up on keeping up with technology. I figure as long as I've got kids, I can lean on them for whatever help I need. Thanks for the update.

Trust me, only the ones that design and sell it, and few eager buyers are truly on the cutting edge of the very latest connectivity devices.
I gave up on that also. I know where most of the keys are on my PC keyboard, and know what goes in some of those strange looking slots. I know about all I need to know.
Oh, I know enough for the Nigerian scammers to try to get me to GIVE them my money for free. LOL

NONSENSE I agree you probably have a damaged connector, or even one somehow wired incorrectly.

Can you see the slot or are you feeling around behind it. A USB will slide into a network terminal. You can also jam them in upside down. BTDT

I have seen a static discharge shut a computer down but if it happens every time you plug in a USB device I suspect something is wrong.
