What's the best way to put a kill switch on J.D. A

I want to put a kill switch on my hand start J.D. A .What's the best way to go about it? I thought it would have a ground on the side of the mag it don't .What now?

Basically you just need to ground the low voltage side of the magneto coil. This is easiest done by connecting a wire to the point connection then to a ground to short out the magneto. Some Wico type X mags have an external post for this purpose. I have seen other mag that have had a hole drilled to lead the wire out to a ground, but sealing around it can be an issue. I have added a ground post to mine by using insulating bushings that you can get at any Radio Shack store. It makes a neat water tight installation. Originally the tractor was shut off by turning off the fuel, letting it run out of kerosene.

The Wico X Model Mags have an option (you may or may not have???) for a kill stud/terminal out the side and then you can EITHER use a lil springy push button contactor to ground the points to kill the spark OR ELSE run a wire from that stud/terminal up to the dash where you mount a kill switch or key switch etc which grounds that wire to frame ground to kill the spark.

Thw Wico Model C did not have that option but some people drill a hole and run a wire through there (sealed with silicone) to the points terminal and then up to the dash as above..

For a hand cranker I recommend to kill it by turning the gas off and letting her die and a dash mounted On Off key switch or toggle etc is still a good safety feature if an instant shut down is required and/or if kids are around.

The manual for my JD H instructed to shut off fuel and let run until it dies, that would provide for easier starting next time.

Thanks for the replies.I use the tractor for events more than on the farm.Thats why I'd like a kill switch that anyone could get to if something happened. So if I ground out the mag it will not cause any harm to it right? Thanks again

That is true for a distilate tractor. But the instructions for a gas A says to "pull speed lever all the way to the rear" The very reason that a distilate tractor DID NOT HAVE a kill switch on the mag is so you would turn the fuel off first and run the carb dry so you would be ready to restart using gasoline. I'll shut up now.

Well Yeah, but what about G's like my '51 that came with battery ignition and key switches? They were still distillate burners. Of course my G isn't any more, not with alumy high comopression pistons, shaved head, etc.etc. Now I'll shut up too.....

If his A would have come with bat ig and a key he wouldn't be asking about grounding the mag. Which I still maintain he does not need. Why do a complicted fix when there is an easy one?

The only way I"ve seen to kill one quickly is to pull the choke lever out till it stops. My father has done this with his since new in 46. Never had any problems with it, except to replace the OEM pistons for High altitude in 1950, and it still has no power problems. Hasn"t had a battery in it for 35 years, and we hand crank to start it.

How do you know if your tractor every used distilate? It would have 2 tanks right. My tractors choke is down on the carb has no lever for choke.
