OT computer help

I have a Compaq Presario S6000 with Windows XP home edition. I tried to turn it on today and the computer will not turn on. The green light on the front and one on the back is blinking. When I turn the surge protector off it will blink a little slower. The monitor will turn on, but will display "go to sleep". The computer is about six years old. To keep it tractor related, it has all my tractor pictures on it.

LFR:

I truly hate to tell you this, but it sounds to me like you might have a bad hard drive.

My advice: DO NOT TRY TO DO ANYTHING ELSE WITH IT. Don't even make any more attempts to turn it on. Take it to a computer repair shop that specializes in data recovery; oftentimes they can recover data, even from a bad hard drive. Might cost a few dollars, but what price do you place on your files and pictures?

This is where a backup hard drive or on-line data storage service like Carbonite come in handy, but, like insurance, it's only effective if you plan ahead.

Good luck -- hope you can get your atuff back.

Best regards,
Geo. D.

You'd think if any light comes on at all, it couldn't be a power supply, but I've seen it happen.

The power supply is a common failure & usually about $45-70 to replace depending on the model.

Especially with a 6 yr old PC, my bet is on the PS. They are usually pretty easy to replace.

If it IS your PS, your hard drive is probably fine and very recoverable.

It could be a bad power supply or mother board problems. I just replaced the power supply on a computer that would run intermittently and the problem was solved. Also look for swollen capacitors on the mother board.

Yep doubt the hard drive is bad, more likely a shorted cap or other component on the main board but the first thing to do is try another power supply and hope....

If it was the hard drive, you would at least get the Compaq banner during bios startup. This happens before the hard drive is booted. I THINK.

Pull the battery and see if the green light blinks when you power on.

can you here any fans running? if fans are running then the power supply might be alright, notice i said might. either a motherboard or power supply problem is best guess. the hp banner that comes up first is in rom memory, not the hard drive or ram, that means that the banner will come up even without the hard drive installed. pull the side of the computer off and look for bulging or leaking capacitors on the motherboard. power supply is an easy swap. four screws hold it in, unplug the ps cables and slide it out, be sure to plug all the cables back in on new ps. if you replace the computer then you can put your old harddrive in an external to retrieve your data, but you might have to use a computer with windows xp and burn you tractor pictures to cd or dvd to move them. hope this helps.
