Yard Hydrant

Well this is certainly off topic but Iam sure I can get some info here. I have a hydrant mounted in my barn which has been trouble free for the last 10 years. This summer in order to keep water infront of a pen of lambs I ran a hose from the hydrant to a float box in a trough with no problems. The lambs went out in early Dec.,Ishut off the hydrant and put the hose away. Now at the end of the month I have need of the hydrant ad it runs water...SLOW probably about a half gallon a minute. The heated bowl upstream in the yard works fine so supply is not the issue. I know that I'll have to likley pull the top off the hydrant to see what is going on. Any thoughts as to what I might find? Plumbing is not one of my favourite jobs, especially in winter. Thanks, Bob

on the top of the rod that comes straight up the pipe there should be some type of a collar with a set screw. losen set screw and move collar down 1/4 inch. retighen set screw and try it. if collar is already setting on cast iron base then losen set screw and pull rod up 1/4 inch with vise grips.

After you adjust a hydrant, shut it off and put your hand over the outlet. If it sucks against your hand, you are OK. If it doesn't, it is not draining back and it can freeze.

Other way. Pull the handle UP a little so it pushes the rod DOWN farther when it's off. I always have the same problem from leaving one on all summer. The rubber stopper in tha valve at the bottom seems to get distorted from being up for so long.
