One more Kerosene heater question

I tried searching but saw mixed answers: Can I burn off road diesel in an old, wick type heater. Would it be safe from a fire standpoint in a shop? I have realized that kerosene is now cost prohibitive- 1 gallon for 9 hours heat, $4.00. Let me know your thoughts, please.

I have used diesel in the type of heater you are talking about, when you first light it it will smoke worse than kerosene and smell a little stronger but once it gets heated up it worked ok. My 2 cents worth, hope it helps.

Still can't recommend it but at least #1 winter diesel works better than #2 summer diesel.
Time to look for a LP or electric heater.

JB - A guy I know used farm diesel in his wick type kerosene heater - in his house. Every sheet rock nail in the entire house developed a spot of soot over it. Had to repaint the entire house. Not the savings that he anticipated.

As dirty as my shop is, a little soot would go un-noticed.

I use K kerosene in mine, but only in spring and fall when the wood furnace makes the shop unbearably hot.

You will quickly go through wicks. I suppose it's safe, but I wouldn't do it. It's going to stink, and the cost and aggravation of changing wicks is going to wipe out what you save on fuel.

Thanks for the advice. Might be time to retire old smokey. I think I"ll try to find a nice wood stove to place in the corner to keep warm and add some ambience. Sitting around the kerosene heater drinking beer just won"t be the same!
