OT: Water Lines Breaking

We have water lines that are breaking probably from the ground shifting from the cold weather here in town. Said there's been 8 breaks in the last week. Hal

Pretty common. Rarely see one break in warm weather. We replaced the last galvanized pipe under the road here at home a month ago. Ran plastic inside a bigger plastic. Makes it easier to sleep at night.

They yer I bought my first house up here in Maine, the mill (which was also the town wter company) came through replacing their 50+ year-old galvanized lines with copper. They didn't dig any deeper, but they covered the new lines with 2" of foam board insulation, two feet wide, before filling back over. They were down better than four feet anyway, but one of the fellas workin' on it said they figure an inch of foam board to be as good as a foot of earth for isulating from the frost.

Here in Omaha we have an entire South bound side of a main arterial closed from a water main break! Say it will be that way for several days! Greg

I've been wondering how many people are going to find a big mess one day when it warms up due to hose bibs freezing up. It's been years, probably a decade or more, since it's been this cold for this long ...

In Northern Montana i have had frozen Pipes to a neighbor at 8 feet down when it was 45 below (no wind chill factor) and little snow insulation. Plastic pipes don't conduct electricity to thaw them either. We insulated the ground and used steam injection to thaw. Best of luck. Jim

In 1994 it was cold as blazes in Jan. Had -17F one morning and we were testing generators for the Army and the diesel fuel was jellin. We switched them to JP4 or JP5 and they never stopped. I was working for a defense contractor
back then. Hal

Some very cold weather (for our area at least) is supposed to hit Wed. nite. Low for Thursday is about 14 with a wind chill in the single digits. Temp won"t get above freezing until Sat.

Most folks down here aren"t used to temps that low and I"ll bet there will be a lot of broken pipes on Sat. when the temp gets above freezing.

BRRRR! Ya"ll can keep the cold weather!

In NW Iowa we have enough snow to pretty well insulate the ground. The other day I was pushing some 20" deep snow and dug the bucket down into the thawed ground. Jim

Hal,
It's been below zero here evermorning for the past 4 days .. it gets to 6 ABOVE today ... tomorrow we are suppose to get 4-7 inches of SNOW .. Thursday High Winds ... Fri the HIGH of
