Have a computer at the shop I would like to have internet service on. It has been used for internet before (regular wired service).

It"s close enough to my sisters home (with wireless internet) I should be able to pick up a wireless signal with a decent antenna.

Wont I need a wireless card on the "puter in order to utilize a wireless signal??? Is that correct? I"ve heard it both ways, I cant wrap my mind around how it can work without something to tell it how to use what it"s getting.

Would be terribly un-handy to try to run a wire to it for regular service.

I ran 125 feet of wire and it works great. Just dug a small trench across lawn and driveway. Made a small slit in the ground using down pressure from my loader tractor with a piece of metal bolted to the bucket.

Wireless usb G network adapter.
This is the little antenna setup to receive the signal, has a usb plug and program to fire it up on your computer.

r a wireless adapter that plugs into a USB port. These signals are usually limited to a few hundred feet.

I love the Wireless cards that you actually install into the computer.

Check out this link, one looks like it has an external antenna. For around $20.00 I wouldn't buy wire.

BUT

Where is the wireless router located? Can you take your phone or a device with wifi and see if there is a decent signal in the shop?

I have wireless in my house. Can not get wireless in the garage, even though it is 25 feet away. Both buildings have steel siding-have heard that will cause loss of signal. I have cable TV and an outdoor-wired-camera out there, so have a 'path' to install a cat 5 cable, just have not done it yet! Greg

if theres a phone line between your sisters house and your shop, there are network cards that utilize standard phone wire...it wont be blazing fast but should be better than dialup.

I"m using a slick solution for steel or concrete buildings; it"s a powerline Ethernet Switch from Netgear (XEB1004). If your sister"s house electrical meter is not too far from the electric meter for your shop, chances are good that this will work over your powerlines.
In the kit you get 2 modules, one to plug into an electrical outlet in the house and connected to a cat 5 cable to her router. The other module plugged into an outlet in your shop with a cat 5 cable to your computer. And presto, if you are under 1000 feet, the internet connection in the shop will be almost as fast as it is in the house.
This kit was $100 from Staples and it works great for me.

Good luck
