Sharkbite Coupling

Here's a sharkbite coupling installed on Pex tubing. It will also fit copper pipe, but you need to clean the copper pipe with steel wool until shiny. You also need to use a tube cutter
when making cuts. Then you just push the sharkbite coupling on the copper pipe until it's seated. I put 100 psi of air pressure on one these and held it under water and it never leaked. They are pricey. Hal

I used a couple a year ago, seem to be fine, installed a small water heater in a pex line. For added security I ran a piece of banding from pex to pex across the top with a hose clamp on each end, as it's in the crawl space and would make an awful mess if it ever blew apart! running up to about 60psi.

Our house was plumbed with PEX when it was built.

In the process of doing upgrades in the bathrooms and kitchen, I've used quite a few Sharkbites. They've always done exactly what they were supposed to do, and did it well.

Very simple and handy, actually.

My wife's sister had her whole house replumbed in Florida. The house was built about 20 years ago and all her neighbor's had their plumbing replaced free since everyone had leaking problems.

I don't know if her late husband told them they didn't have any leaks and they didn't need to bother, but her home was the only one that didn't have the plumbing replaced. Anyway she was told to get 3 estimates and the plumber used Pex. I think the cost was around $7000.00.

Since those homes don't have basements all the plumbing is overhead in the attic and they did this last summer. Since they had to cut into the wallboard to gain access to the water pipes they paid for the repair on the walls and for the repainting. Hal

I have used these, they work just fine, especially in an old wooden house up in a tight space. Just the thought of having a torch near all that old wood gave me the willys. Been in place for about two years now.

There is another brand out there that is along the same line but costs much less, it's called ProBite.

They even compare it on their website and in their literature to "Brand-S".

But neither of them mention where they are made so they're both probably Chinese made crap. I'll stick to the U.S.A. made stuff.
