Identification Numbers on a Ford 3600

Gents,

I have the following numbers stamped on my Ford 3600 bell housing behind the starter:
1) B872066
2) CA353C

I cannot find a third number. Can anyone tell me the year this tractor was built from the above numbers??

Thanks for your help, Ed Fulton

Ed my book says the tractor serial number and model number is stamped on the upper right hand corner of the transmission. You may have to scrape some paint if its ever been repainted in that area. It also says the tractor serial number is also shown on vehicle ID affixed to the tractor engine compartment. Whatever that means but where? All those tractor serial numbers should start with just a C with no other letter should be a six digit number after the C. I'm showing a 3610 CA313 diesel and a CA323C gas but no CA353C I do show a 3610 CX353C narrow orchard diesel. In any case the 3 series appears to have been built after 1981. I hope this helps. You might try posting this on the Ford forum also.

3600 is later than the resources I have, but the "engine compartment plate" should be in front of your eyeballs when you flip open the hood - if parts have not been swapped, it's got (nearly) all the numbers on the tractor on it, or did on the 4500 and the other '65-75 "thousand" series. Neither of my 4500's has lead a pristine (or short) life, and the aluminum plate is still stuck in place and still legible on both.

This link will NOT help you decode your later model number, but it might help you with where to look, if that didn't change much. And if you can pick the right decade, it may provide enough insight to the date codes to tell you when the parts were made (often several months before the tractor was.)

Again, if the older information applies (which it might not), a B serial number is a British-built tractor.

Thank you very much for your response. Both you and souNdguy have led me to 1981-82 for the build date on my Ford 3600 tractor. I suspect that the Brits built Ford 3600's beyond year 1981, which was the last year they were built in the US.

I have learned that this tractor was built in Basildon, England which is indicated by the "B" in front of the serial number. I'm hoping to find someone who has access to records indicating which year my tractor was built.

Thanks again for your help!!

Thanks very much for your response. This tractor had a bad fire 15+ years ago, and if there was an engine compartment plate it is looong gone!!

I rebuilt it myself, and in retrospect I wouldn't do that again. A lot of work, but it was restored to first class condition.

My reward for all that work is a tractor that has been absolutely remarkable! A workhorse beyond all my expectations!

I took the serial number and model numbers from the bell housing where the drawings indicated where they would be. I could not find the date of production numbers.

Anytime! If you need any more help just e-mail me. My book does list what constitutes a CA, CV or CX. If you list how many transmission speeds, gas or diesel two stage draft control etc; or I could copy my two pages and see what fits your tractor the best. Good Luck! CT
