i have a 98 dodge 1/2 ton 5.9 engine will turn over fine, has spark, will fire and sputter but will not run. It is below 0 so I dumped 2 bottles of HEET in it, had the battery charger on it for awhile now and a kerosene heater blowing under it for 1/2 hour no change. Any one have any ideas? thx

Is the fuel pump running/do you have fuel pressure?

Crankshaft position sensors on those commonly fail, but I don't think you'd have spark if that was the case.

If it was heavily flooded when still COLD the plugs may be wet with fuel and refuse to fire 'til the engine gets heated up summertime-warm or you change the plugs.

It may be ice if its cold where you are blocking the fuel. Had that problem on Chevy Citation seem to collect in the fuel filter. I put a heat gun on the filter and it started. Hal

wondered about the filter haven't checked it though. I'd like for the plugs to warm up to summertime temps lol maybe i'll pull one and see

I know this will sound weird, but check the battery. Dodge in their great wisdom put the coil after the battery, hence the alternator charges the battery which then powers the coil. Works great as long as the battery is good. But if the battery bites, it sucks up all the available current and the truck gets no spark.

I have a 99 with the 318 and have had this happen a couple times to me already. One thing I can do to tell for sure if it is this is to give it some throttle when trying to start it. The truck will stay running as long as the idle is around 1200 or higher. If you let off the gas she will die pretty much instantly.

I also have had loose battery cables on the truck cause the same thing as well. Check those as well.

Well don't know for sure but put the heater under it again for another half hour and with some "coaxing" I talked it into starting. Must have been the fuel system I hope, too cold for something else with intermittent problems.

My 96' 2500 with a 360 sits out in the cold until time to plow, this seems to be a common problem, new coil, wires, plugs, cap, rotor - what a pain to change. If I keep it at 1200 RPM's until the temp gauge goes up it will idle. With the Electric over Hydraulic Plow, the battery will get low, this is a fairly new large battery.
