O/T spreadsheets farm related

How many of you farmers run a spreadsheet on every field. Last year an accountant friend of mine got me to thinking about this so I cooked one up for 2009 and it left a lot to be desired. It took some discipline for this outdoorsman to sit down and do it, but at least I got something started.

For the last couple of days my back has been about as grumpy as it can be and I can only stand to be in the shop for about an hour before I have to come in and sit down, so I've been working at a new and revised version for 2010.
With the help of my wife I got the hang of putting formulas into XL and now it's kind of fun to watch it work for me.

Researching the figures to plug in to it is akin to doing taxes but unlike taxes the spreadsheet can always be off a few dollars without triggering a jail sentence threat.

Anyway, just wondering how many of you do this. It takes discipline and the right frame of mind, that's for sure. Jim

You said to estimate profit or loss. Don't you mean loss or bigger loss? This is not intended to say anything about your abilities, just ag in general.

Yes, it will show you your losses. Maybe that's why some people don't mess with it. Without good record keeping you can be showing a loss and not know it and you don't have any way of knowing where to start, to reverse it.

A perfect example was a field I cash rent that showed a loss on the sheet. I showed the sheet to the landlady last August and low and behold, she LOWERED the rent. MUCH to my surprise. It was one of the few landlord rent letters that made me smile.Jim

Been using an excel spreadsheet to track farm expenses for years. Once you have the formulas in place it's just a matter of plugging in the numbers.

Well I guess your right, My land is paid for so all I count is out of pocket expenses. If I counted how much I loose if I was buying the land and my labor it would be depressing. Still, at one time I"ve made enough to pay everything off so I"ve made a profit in the long haul. My equipment is old but functional but it and my cattle are also paid for. I"ve tried to keep from paying a bankers salary.
