OT Sulfur in my well

I had a well drilled several years ago and have had mild sulfur ever since. I use a 5 micron filter and it helps until it builds up and then I replace the filter and good for a few more months. The filter usually has a gray build up on it when I change it.

My question comes from this. I went to Florida for two weeks and when I got back the sulfur smell was just awful. I went to change the filter and it was black and the inside of the can was black. I could wipe it out easily. I got it cleaned up and put it back together and the smell is gone again. Now my question. Is the black from the sulfur or from bacteria or something else?

At my parent the iron eating bacteria released the sulfur smell and left a soft grey scum that would turn black on the surface once it got about 1/8" thick.

We had to get the bole hole brushed then shocked with solid pucks of chlorine that sank to the bottom (artesian).

It was cleaned about 10 years ago now and the smell hasn't come back. They did also dissinfect the house piping and water tanks too. The magnesium hot water tank anodes will support an "infection" too they were told.

You could try dumping 3 or 4 gallons of laundry bleach down the well ifs organic iron that is causing the problem. IT will help for a few months before it comes back. I'll almost bet your well driller didn't disinfect his tools from his last well job.
