fuel sender float

I posted a couple of days ago about the float and part of the float arm coming off of the sender in the fuel tank on the 630 and banging around in the tank, flaking off some of the foam in the float.

I have the tank cleaned and ready to go. Now it's time to concentrate on the damaged float. It's made of some kind of styrofoam type product that's coated with a shellac to keep the foam from flaking off. The stuff I call the shellac is worn off of about a third of the foam, exposing the foam. I'd like to get some kind of a shellac painted back over the foam but I have no idea what to use. Is there something available that's gas/ethanol proof? Will anything even stick to the foam now that it's been floating around in gasoline? I'm out of my league on this project. Jim

Can't you just come up with a brass ball off of another sending unit? Oliver used them. Must be something out there somewhere. Even I'm not such a restoration purist that the sending unit float has to be original. lol

I thought about that too and it's probably the best way to go. I'm just feeling lazy tonight. Come to think of it, I do have an old Dodge pickup sending unit out in the store room.Jim

Last resort: John Wolf & Co. Inc. Willoughby, OH www.johnwolfco.com rebuilds fuel sending units for the old car people.

Many years ago we made fuel sender arms for Ford. They had a brass float that clipped into them. Maybe you could find an old brass float from something, maybe even an old carb, and solder it to your arm? no particles of anything to worry about.
Good Luck,
Paul

Go to your ford car dealer and buy a new brass float, about $10, nowadays, IIRC. Part # C0AZ-9202-B .

They're available on the 'net for as little as $5, but the shipping would probably make it more $$ than at the local dealer.

What's sealall? Just curious. Looks like I'll be soldering on a brass one, but for future reference it's nice to know of more options.

Yesterday I removed the tank filler neck, straightened out the filler hole and successfully soldered the neck back on. So hopefully the float will be a snap. Jim

I get it at True Value Hardware. Works good, I keep a tube around all the time. Chris

Worst case NAPA has universal sending units. I think they are about $25. They usually are hanging on one of the racks in the store with the boat supplies. If as suggested the Ford float would work they are cheap and easy to come by. I've used those also.

I just now fixed it with a brass float that looks exactly like the one Bob has the pic of. Came off of an old sending unit for a Dodge pickup. A couple of snips with the side cutter and a couple of spots with the MIG and it was a done deal. Thanks for the replies. Jim
