My hats off to you guys up north

Just digging out of 14 inches of snow (so they say) here in central oklahoma. Wind was blowing 40 mph, drifts three to five feet deep. I don't know how ya'll do it every winter. This global warming is an ol she dog.

What we do is learn to live with it!! ;))

Then we get ready long before it comes!
Then whole up like a gopher when it does!
Just remember how you looking for some
of that white stuff last August. It also goes
away but never soon enough right!

Thats why they call it cabin fever! ;))

Temps haven't be TOO bad here in northern ND, but we can almost ALWAYS expect -20º for New Years Eve.

Local forecast for tomorrow night is -18º.

Real winter doesn't usually hit us until after New Years. Up til then it's just practice. We start getting ready about Halloween, and are sick of it by March. In April all of the white stuff melts and we have mud, which is 10 times worse. Finally about May 1 spring arrives. Summer is on July 4th, then we start over. LOL

Well, you would think we would be ready. I usually am. With harvest SO screwed up this year, I didn't even get the air conditioner wrapped. That's cool, wind never blows from the North anyhow. The shop needs both woodburner barrels replaced so no heat there. I still have the 880 Ollie blown all over 1 bay and some of it under a 10' drift. Wood is at least cut-sure wish it and the splitter were on this side of the snow pile. I wanted to be as ready as you say we are but I am pretty sure I am in for a LONG winter. O yeah and we didn't get about 90 acres out. Isn't mine but still didn't even get the rush of getting done. I am glad it ain't mine cuz it still is upsetting me to say the least, can't imagine how they feel w/about 85 acres left. Sorry about the LONG post but I saw my chance to vent and took it! There's guys w/lots more left standing than us but still...Have a GREAT 2010 all. I just hope MA Nature gets even with whoever she's mad at so next season is a little more normal. Fred

UP here real winter starts in November. We had 84" of snow in the first 3 weeks of December. I haven't been counting since.

You couldent have said it better than that Fred. Amen to that, I hope Ma nature feels better next year. Happy 2010. j

I guess that we don't average over six inches of snow a year here. So we sure were caught by surprise even though the weatherman said it would be a big storm. We just don't ever see anything like that. I sure am not a pro at moving snow off a driveway. Spent Christmas morning learning. See ya Steve

As has been said, we know it's coming and SORTA are prepared for it. Here in Wisconsin, we need a couple inches of snow to even slow down most drivers. It takes about 16 inches of snow for most businesses to consider closing due to weather. You guys get two inches and the state shuts down.

Nice thing about being "Up North" is this cleansing winter-kill. We haven't had to worry about soybean rust yet because it can only over-winter in the south.

I feel kind of odd sending in this reply but , up untill last Monday we have not had any cold. Monday nite it dropped to 0 F and did't come back up much till wed morn, but has warmed up all day long and is now around +30 F . We have only 4" of snow, and rain in the forcast for New Years Eve. Lots of winters we have snow up past our knees by now, so I know what you guys in the mid west and northeren states are going thru , I guess we have just slipped it this year. Best of luck to everyone and have a Happy New Year !!

been tired of that white stuff for a long time already 15 inches first snow fall 2 or 3 more since of 3 or 4 inches each and a big ice storm for good measure.
i love northwest il most of the time but these al gore winters are getting old.

It's all in what you're used to. When we lived in MN near Lake Superior, it was not a big deal to get 36" of snow over three or so days. School didn't close, there was no rush in the grocery stores. All it meant for me was clearing the drive before going to work in the morning and then again when I got home in the evening.

When we moved to southern MO, that first couple of summers the heat just about killed me. I am still not fond of 90+ degree weather, but to some extent I've gotten used to it.

By the way, what helps with snow is having the equipment, manpower and experience to deal with it. I know a guy who works for the county here, I kid him about their little toy snowplow trucks.

Every year, the first real snow increaes the flow of Buicks and Crown Vics on I75 south!!

This is my 52nd Minnesota winter. For the first time in my life, I'm feeling a little tug in my gut to go south for a week or 2. Not nearly enough to go, just a nagging feeling. I've dedicated this winter to getting my shop done on the inside. I've just lost too many winters sitting in the house. As far as the snow, Id rather deal with snow than those week or 10 day spells of below zero cold. Got up at 530 this am and it was -9. Went out to the shop and turned the heat up. Came in and had coffee. Went to Home Cheapo and picked up a couple things and its 3 above out. So all in all...not too bad. Another thought on winter...I'll take MN's -10 long before the 15 above you guys get south of here. Must be the damp or something, but that cold chills me right to the bone. We often get more credit than we deserve for being a tough bunch up here.

When I retired in 1999, we ,a fast as possible left Illinois, our mostly life long local, for the sun of Arizona. Love it except for winter, which we are having right now. 35-40 degrees and overcast skies with 40% humidity is very uncomfortable to us now.90-100 degrees is t-shirt and shorts and enjoying it. Maybe it is a state of mind thing.

Just have to find things to do in the winter to keep your mind off the fact that the days are only 7 hours long! I snowmobile, ice fish, in a heated shack of course, and drink a lot of good old Wisconsin brewski. There is also a large increase in September and October births, do the math! Its all in how you look at it.

In Vermont we have 3 seasons. Last Winter, This Winter, and next Winter. I wouldn"t live anywhere else except maybe PEI, Canada. Was there 3 months ago, going again as soon as I can work it out. Dick in Vermont.

Calling for up to 25" of new snow tonight. Its not late breaking news, just another day. Nothing is closed and the roads will be plowed.
