OT-Ford 4.2L v-6

I have an '01 F-150 with the 4.2L v-6 engine. I've been happy with it, great economy and enough power to haul my tractors around well. Friend of mine has a '98 with the same engine, his engine had to be replaced at 80,000 miles, repair shop told him it was a fairly common problem with that engine that year. Who has had one for a period of time and what has been your experience?Thanks,

Mine grenaded in the driveway at 80K miles. Leaking intake gasket cause two cylinders to fill with antifreeze and hydrolock. 2 bent rods. What a pile of junk. Very common issue according to local Ford mechanics. Replaced engine and had the engine go through 4 coil packs in 40K miles. It became a cash for clunkers donation. Probably back from China by now and your grandkids are playing with toys made from the recycled heap.
 
Neighbor had a major problem with the 4.2 in his '98, R+R the engine, had no trouble with my '00, has had quite an easy life though.
 
that was a '98 problem.

bad intake gaskets. They had it fixed by 99. I owned an 01 w/ a 4.2. 130000 trouble free miles, and it is still going strong for the new owner.
 
Our office p/u is a 2000 150 with the V/6. 218,000 miles and still runs great. Besides a clutch nothing major has been done to it.
 
I put over 100,000 on an 05 with that motor and my uncle has a 99 with one. His sees light duty but I have pulled up to 12,000 lbs with mine and I can say nothing bad about power or reliability.
 
I have one in an 03 F150 I'm also a tech at a Ford dealer they are a great engine. We have a company that comes in from time to time that run the 4.2 in the freestar vans. I know one of those vans had 500,000+ miles with original engine before it gave up.
