When I was 12 years old my Step-Father took me though the round house in Green River, WY and I got to climb up into the Cab of one of these, what a thrill.

That is so neat, Walter.

A rail fan all of my life, I have always been mesmerized by steam locomotives, and the UP 4884 Big Boys were/are near the top of any rail fans list.

I have seen that one its a shame they left it just to rust there out in the weather when they could restore it and build a nice cover for it.
That could have been the one I was on not sure.

Walt,
The 4449 is up here in portland, and it is still in running condition. They take it out for a run occasionally. It is currently housed in the remains of the roundhouse at burlington yard in portland, along with the OR&N 197, and the SPS 700. The city owns them but has a deal set up with a couple of groups to maintain them and run them.
Tim in OR

You can still do that in Baltimore, Md. They have the biggest one built--Allegheny--used to haul coal out of the "mountains" here. It's pretty impressive. The railroad museum in Baltimore is pretty good.

When I was a little guy, maybe 6 yr old or so I rode in a diesel switch engine on the roundtable at the Chicago Northwestern roundhouse in Sioux City. I was scared to death. When I look back at that time I kick myself for not enjoying the ride of my life. My great uncle was a steam mechanic for the Great Northern and as I understand they used the CNW roundhouse. He never could get the hang of working on diesels.Jim
