just watched a TV sales pitch for the rockwell sonicrafter - an oscillating tool looks about the shape of a sidegrinder - how long have these things been out? does anyone have one?

IMHO, they are a consumer-grade remake of "cast saws" that have been around for a LONG time.

Dont buy a cheap one. The best one is from FEIN. I have one from harbor freight. Tool not too bad but accessories are cheap. The multi-master from Fein will do many functions, has been around a long time and is the rolls royce of this type of tool,399 with tools and case or 299 without some tools and case. Google fein multimaster

I have a Dremel I use the heck out of. Gets so hot you can't hold it but the smoke is still in it. I buy the aftermarket blades on E-bay. Dremel blades are high. Rockwell makes a good oscillating saw also. For $120 you can't beat them. You can carefully cut in a tight space where a sawsall won't. I cut plastic drain pipe in tight places where I couldn't get a saw.

Good part about all these vibrating type tools is after the blade wears out, you can mig weld a piece of hacksaw blade to the worn out blade, and keep goin'!
